Across a wide range of age groups, the market for animated films is flourishing, with multiple studios contributing to this success. However, which among these animations has emerged as the most triumphant?

Zootopia (2016)

In a striking success for Disney, Zootopia soared as one of their top-earning animated productions ever. Featuring Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, this film paints a picture of a world where animals coexist peacefully, yet mirrors the complex social issues faced in reality. The protagonist, Officer Judy Hopps, eagerly awaits her first major investigation, which materializes as predators within the city start displaying uncivilized behavior.

Together, the duo unravel the mystery of what’s happening and the identity of the culprit, in this captivating animated noir classic. At long last, a follow-up to the film is on its way, promising yet another thrilling animated journey.

Despicable Me 3 (2017)

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that Illumination just keeps churning out hits one after another, and Despicable Me 3 was no exception. In this latest installment, our beloved character Gru, played by Steve Carell, discovers he has a long-lost twin brother named Dru. The two of them join forces to take down a new villain threatening the world with their combined genius minds.

The return of Gru only excited audiences more, kicking off a new era for the series.

Moana 2 (2024)

At first, I was taken aback when I heard Disney was planning a sequel for Moana. But just as the final scenes were about to roll, they made an unexpected move – turning that nearly finished short into a full-length film instead! And oh boy, did it pay off! This new take on Moana became one of Disney’s biggest successes in years. Jumping back into the enchanting world of Moana, we discover fresh landscapes, meet captivating characters, and uncover hidden powers – all adding up to an unforgettable cinematic experience!

Restructuring the initial episodes of the Moana Disney+ series into a full-length animated movie proved to be financially beneficial for the company, despite maintaining an episodic narrative structure that viewers can recognize. The triumph of this film has paved the way for the production of Moana 3.

Toy Story 3 (2010)

Initially, Andy owned the toys, but in Toy Story 3, they chose to let the characters age along with the viewers. This resulted in a movie that wasn’t just another adventure starring Woody and his friends, but rather a poignant farewell to the toys and the entire Toy Story series.

In the process of moving on to college, Andy inadvertently loses his cherished toys at a daycare center ruled by an ominous teddy bear. To return home, these toys embark on a heroic journey towards freedom. This adventure resulted in one of the most memorable escapes. Toy Story 4 (2019)

As a fan, I found it unexpected when the Toy Story series, known for its immense profitability by Disney and Pixar, seemed to end with the third film. However, in hindsight, it wasn’t shocking that they would eventually continue the tales through a series of shorts. Yet, nine years after the finale, I was pleasantly surprised when they returned to the story with a fourth installment.

In an effort to resonate with fans worldwide, the third film concludes with another heartwarming finale. Following their displacement at a county fair, Woody and the toys embark on a journey to return home to Bonnie. But along the way, Woody encounters his former love interest, Bo Peep, who was left behind in Toy Story 2.

Minions (2015)

In a surprising turn of events, the adorable, sunshine-hued Minions, donning overalls, have made their way into becoming one of the highest-grossing spinoff films ever produced. Making their debut in 2010, these characters rapidly became beloved by fans. Their agility as animated figures brought to mind cherished cartoons such as The Looney Tunes and productions from Hanna-Barbera. The extraordinary appeal of the Minions led to them getting their own standalone film not long after.

In the movie Minions, it was the characters themselves, not the storyline, that really shone. Directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, the film centered around Minions named Kevin, Stuart, and Bob as they searched for a new villain to work under. One of the reasons these characters were so popular globally is because they didn’t speak English, allowing audiences from all linguistic backgrounds to appreciate their humor without any language barriers. Minions quickly became a hit, and its sequel, Minions: Rise of Gru, continued its success story.

The Incredibles 2 (2018)

2004 saw “The Incredibles” make a splash as an entertaining, thrilling superhero film suitable for all ages. Pixar crafted a lively, animated masterpiece that continues to be cherished to this day. The movie’s success is particularly noteworthy given that the era of superhero films was yet to truly bloom by another five years approximately. To leverage its brand recognition and tap into the emerging superhero genre, Pixar opted to revisit the Parr family for another adventure.

The Incredibles II continues the story directly from the first film, with the Parr family facing fresh challenges. Bob finds it tough adjusting to his new role as a stay-at-home parent, while Helen, known as Elastigirl, embarks on various secret missions to safeguard the city and restore faith in superheroes among the public. The film maintains the vibrant and engaging style of the original, and it proved to be a significant financial success at the box office.

Frozen (2013)

Back in 2013, Disney’s Frozen was an entertainment sensation that captivated people for months on end, eventually becoming one of the studio’s all-time greatest successes. Drawing inspiration from the timeless tale by Hans Christian Andersen, it offered a refreshing take on the classic princess narrative. Idina Menzel portrays Elsa, a royal with magical ice abilities, while Kristen Bell brings Anna, her lively sibling, to life. Their journey involves not only mending their chilly relationship but also rescuing their kingdom from impending peril.

Everywhere you looked, there was evidence of the movie “Frozen,” from its memorable characters to its marketing campaigns, particularly the acclaimed soundtrack that seemed to win every award. The film practically earned enough money back through merchandise sales to cover its production costs. This blockbuster success is why Disney decided to produce not one but two sequels and several spin-offs for this beloved movie.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

In 2023, it was Illumination’s turn to correct the errors of the earlier film and produce a Mario Bros. movie that would achieve global fame, following in the footsteps of the games. Fortunately, The Super Mario Bros. Movie lived up to this expectation.

Featuring Chris Pratt portraying Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser, the movie brought to life the classic tale of the Mario Brothers’ mission to prevent Bowser from conquering the mushroom kingdom. While some might argue it could have been more daring, the film was warmly received by audiences worldwide. The upcoming sequel, titled Super Mario World, set for release in 2026, is poised to build on this movie’s impressive success.

Frozen II (2019)

It was nearly inevitable that the immense success of “Frozen” for Walt Disney Animation Studios would lead to “Frozen II” being released shortly after. However, six long years passed before fans were finally presented with a fresh tale, songs, and continuation of their beloved characters from the first movie. Upon hearing an enigmatic voice, Elsa and her companions venture into a magical forest to uncover the truth about Elsa’s hidden powers.

The movie, similar to its earlier version, garnered immense public favor even amidst less favorable critic assessments. It raked in nearly $1.5 billion globally, placing it among the highest-grossing films ever made.
