I’ve learned that a film can be dubbed a “box-office bomb” when its production, distribution costs, and earnings fall significantly short of covering these expenses. This financial flop is often due to a multitude of factors beyond the movie’s inherent quality. In fact, some bombs have been praised critically, despite incurring losses. Over time, many of these box-office disappointments are rediscovered and appreciated as cult classics, even if they initially received a cold welcome. Conversely, a failure to earn back costs can also cement an enduring negative reputation.
Regardless of the acting talent involved, a movie can still flop at the box office. For instance, the 2021 film “Chaos Walking,” featuring stellar performances by Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, and Madds Mikkelsen, reportedly lost approximately $100 million in profits. Another example is the 1980 release of “Heaven’s Gate,” starring Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, and John Hurt. Despite its impressive cast, the film failed financially, generating negative publicity for United Artists that ultimately led to the company being sold in 1981, effectively ending its independent studio status.
Mads Mikkelsen and Nick Jonas Play a Father-Son Duo
The 2021 movie, titled “Chaos Walking,” seemed primed to join the ranks of notable teen dystopian series like “The Hunger Games” and “Maze Runner.” However, it failed to do so. This science-fiction film is an adaptation of the initial book in Patrick Ness’ trilogy under the same title. The story unfolds on a planet where females are absent, and men involuntarily disclose their thoughts via a phenomenon known as “noise” – a continuous flow of sounds and images that surrounds them. One day, a girl named Viola Eade unexpectedly arrives on this planet by crash landing.
In this world, it’s Daisy Ridley, famed for her role in the sequel trilogy, who portrays the sole female character. Tom Holland, recognized for his work as Spider-Man in the MCU, takes on Todd Hewitt, initially the only one willing to assist her. Mads Mikkelsen steps into the shoes of Mayor David Prentiss, a ruthless leader of a colony with sinister intentions, while Nick Jonas plays Davy Prentiss Jr., the son of this villain who follows blindly. Cynthia Erivo is Hildy, the head of another settlement. The ensemble cast also includes David Oyelowo and Demián Bichir. However, despite these talented actors’ efforts, the film didn’t manage to shake off its negative image.
Charlize Theron Plays The Wife Living a Nightmare
Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron have shared the lead roles just once, in the 1999 movie “The Astronaut’s Wife.” Despite its lackluster performance at the box office and a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, this chilling suspense film has gained a devoted cult following. Depp portrays Commander Spencer Armacost, who returns from space displaying strange behavior. Theron takes on the role of his wife, Jillian Armacost, who discovers something amiss with her husband after she becomes pregnant.
I enthusiastically appreciate Joe Morton portraying Sherman Reese, NASA’s dedicated representative. Clea DuVall brilliantly brings Nan, Jillian’s sister, to life. The fascinating twins, Dylan and Cole Sprouse, join the crew. Nick Cassavetes, son of John Cassavetes, excellently plays Captain Alex Streck, who embarks on the same mission as Armacost alongside our protagonist. Donna Murphy convincingly plays Natalie Streck, his supportive wife. Despite the film’s perceived limitations, the actors delivered exceptional performances with the materials they were given. DuVall and Theron display a captivating sibling chemistry, while Johnny Depp delivers one of his most chilling performances to date.
John Hurt, Isabelle Huppert, Willem Dafoe Are Also in It
1980’s Michael Cimino-directed Western epic, “Heaven’s Gate,” faced both financial flop and intense debate among critics due to its controversial nature. Despite allegations of animal cruelty on set, which sparked a boycott of its release, it managed to reach a broad audience through film festivals. However, the intense criticism and negative publicity it received dealt a heavy blow to the production company, United Artists, causing them to withdraw it from theaters. A revised version was later released, with approximately one minute of animal abuse footage edited out.
Movie experts point to the demise of United Artists in 1981 being largely due to the flop of “Heaven’s Gate,” which led to a trend in Hollywood where major studios began to overshadow independent ones during subsequent decades. Whether you admire or criticize the film, it’s clear that its cast is highly skilled. The main actor, Kris Kristofferson, gained fame for his role in the 1976 remake of “A Star is Born.” Christopher Walken, who has had a long career, recently starred in the AppleTV+ hit series “Severance.” Additionally, this film features John Hurt, Isabelle Huppert, and Jeff Bridges. Even Willem Dafoe, then a newcomer, made an appearance, playing the unnamed character Willy without screen credit.
Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd Are in a Love Triangle
In the film “How Do You Know“, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd, and Reese Witherspoon find themselves entangled in a humorous and complicated love situation. While another romantic comedy featuring these two actors, titled “Overnight Delivery“, seemed promising since 2010, the movie fell short of delivering the anticipated financial success. Unlike other box office flops, this film received mixed to average reviews from critics. However, there are certainly positive aspects worth mentioning, such as the endearing chemistry between the leading actors.
Although Jack Nicholson hasn’t formally announced retirement, his role in the 2010 romantic comedy stands as his last screen appearance to date. In this film, he portrays Charles Madison, who appears to be an untrustworthy father and employer to Paul Rudd’s character, George, initially. However, it’s gradually unveiled that Nicholson’s character is far from benevolent – a despicable individual willing to punish his own son for wrongdoings. Indeed, the captivating performance of this legendary actor as the villain makes the movie worth watching.
Christina Ricci, John Goodman and Susan Sarandon Co-Star
The movie titled “Speed Racer” was released in 2008, written and directed by the Wachowski sisters, famed for the Matrix series. This film is an adaptation of a namesake anime and has been in production since 1992. The movie garnered mixed reactions and earned around $30 million less than its budget. Unfortunately, it’s among the films that have faced confirmed cases of animal abuse, which are always problematic and lead to negative publicity.>
“Speed Racer” is a 2008 film written and directed by the Wachowski sisters, recognized for their Matrix trilogy. It’s adapted from an anime of the same name and has been in development since 1992. The movie received mixed reviews and fell short of its budget by approximately $30 million. Regrettably, it is one of the films that have had documented instances of animal abuse, which are unacceptable and usually result in unfavorable press coverage.>
In this version of the story, Emile Hirsch takes on the role of Speed Racer. Christina Ricci portrays Trixie, who is Speed’s romantic interest. John Goodman embodies Speed’s father, while Susan Sarandon brings Speed’s mother to life. The talented ensemble also features a variety of international actors such as Hiroyuki Sanada, Rain, Yu Nan, Benno Fürmann, and Kick Gurry, all sharing the big screen together for a unique cinematic experience. Regrettably, despite this diverse cast, the film didn’t manage to draw in enough viewers.
Zawe Ashton Is Great as the Tragic Villain
The Marvel Studios catalog includes a few movies and projects that didn’t perform as well with audiences. Contrary to popular belief, The Marvels, set for release in 2023, isn’t their lowest-rated film; however, it is one of the studio’s less favored projects among fans due to its sequel status to Captain Marvel (2019). The upcoming movie is significant as it contributes to the Multiverse Saga and features an impressive cast coming together. Despite these appealing factors, some fans still rank this superhero film at the bottom of their list within the Marvel franchise.
Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani deliver fantastic performances as Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan respectively. Zawe Ashton’s portrayal of Dar-Benn, a tragic Kree leader seeking to bring peace after the Kree Civil War, was impressive. However, many fans feel that the issue with Dar-Benn wasn’t due to Ashton’s acting but rather the script’s failure to create a compelling villain with such a positive motivation.
Even Taylor Swift’s Casting Didn’t Help at the Box Office
In David O. Russell’s movie Amsterdam, there are numerous well-known actors. For the main roles in this 2022 period mystery comedy, we have Christian Bale as a doctor for war veterans, Margot Robbie as a nurse, and John David Washington as both a lawyer and a war veteran. Additionally, the talented ensemble includes Robert De Niro, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Timothy Olyphant, and Rami Malek.
In addition to the lead actor, other notable performers in this movie are Michael Shannon, recognized for his roles in “Revolutionary Road” and “Nocturnal Animals”; Mike Myers, famous for the “Austin Powers” series; Ed Begley Jr., frequently seen on screen; and Beth Grant, known for her work in “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Donnie Darko”. The film “Amsterdam” also features a cameo by Taylor Swift, who typically sells out stadiums with her music. However, her luck hasn’t been as good in films; her recent appearances, including this David O. Russell comedy and “Cats”, have been massive box-office flops.
John Malkovich, Kurt Russel and Kate Hudson Couldn’t Save It
The movie “Deepwater Horizon,” released in 2016, is based on the true incident of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, a significant environmental disaster that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. This event, classified as the largest marine oil spill in the petroleum sector’s history, presents a complex topic to explore. Despite earning minimal revenue at the box office, it garnered praise from critics. However, it faced criticism for deviating from historical facts.
Among the many gifted actors participating is John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, and Dylan O’Brien. In this production, Mark Wahlberg portrays Mike Williams, a true-to-life electronics technician who was on the oil rig during the catastrophe; while Kate Hudson takes on the role of his wife, Felicia. Interestingly, this is the first film where Hudson and her stepfather collaborate.
Idris Elba, Alice Braga and Pete Davidson Are Also in It
Despite Margot Robbie’s beloved Harley Quinn captivating DC fans, her stardom and the character’s history weren’t sufficient to prevent this peculiar sequel from flopping at the box office. Originally hired as David Ayer’s replacement in DC’s Suicide Squad franchise, the new director significantly altered the tone of the series. His solo sequel not only feels disjointed from its predecessor but also shares almost identical it simply includes a “the” before the team’s name. These choices resulted in a highly perplexing marketing campaign for the film.
The revised ensemble starring alongside Margot Robbie is exceptional. Idris Elba portrays the mercenary Robert DuBois, more famously known as Bloodsport. Viola Davis reprises her role as the shrewd Amanda Waller, whose powerful performance as ARGUS director forms the foundation of the movie. Notably, even minor roles are filled by talented actors, such as Alice Braga playing the rebel leader Sol Soria.
Morgan Freeman Returns as God
In its own right, the sequel to “Bruce Almighty,” titled “Evan Almighty,” earned nearly as much as its production cost. However, it was a significant commercial disappointment, not only due to financial aspects but also because it failed to meet the high expectations set by the original Jim Carrey film in terms of audience reception. Contrary to its box office flop status, “Evan Almighty” is actually a stellar comedy performance by Steve Carell. Moreover, the movie brings back Morgan Freeman’s side-splitting portrayal of God.
In this production, Steve Carell portrays Evan, a man who is tasked by God to construct an ark for the purpose of preserving Earth’s wildlife from a catastrophic flood. Lauren Graham takes on the role of Joan Baxter, Evan’s spouse. She gained fame as Lorelai Gilmore in the series Gilmore Girls. Johnny Simmons assumes the character of their eldest son, Dylan, who had his debut in a feature film with this role; he previously appeared in the movie “Jennifer’s Body.” This high-profile ensemble cast also features John Goodman, Wanda Sykes, John Michael Higgins, and Jonah Hill.
