Caution: This discussion includes SPOILERS about the appearance of a character from The Mandalorian in Andor season 2, which could have been a fitting and intriguing crossover for Star Wars’ newest series. However, it is worth noting that Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy takes great care to ensure that the series avoids unnecessary cameos, with every character serving a significant purpose within the narrative. In my opinion, there’s one potential cameo in season 2 of Andor that could have positively impacted not only the series but also The Mandalorian as well.
In “The Mandalorian,” the remnants of the Empire are scattered after the Galactic Civil War, but only small areas still hold Imperial loyalists. On the other hand, “Andor” takes place when the Empire is at its peak, with the first Death Star almost finished. I find it intriguing to imagine that Migs Mayfeld from The Mandalorian could have been part of the storyline, depicting his early career as an Imperial soldier who might have taken part in some of the most heinous acts portrayed in Andor season 2 during its time period.
The Mandalorian’s Migs Mayfeld Was An Imperial Sharpshooter
He Wasn’t A Stormtrooper
In the first season of The Mandalorian, Migs Mayfeld, portrayed by Bill Burr, made his initial appearance. He was part of a group that Din Djarin temporarily joined during an escape from a prison transport. However, after the group attempted to deceive Din Djarin, the Mandalorian retaliated and left the criminals to be apprehended by the New Republic. Interestingly, Din Djarin later reached out to Migs in season 2 of The Mandalorian for assistance in finding Imperial Remnant’s Moff Gideon. This was due to Migs’ known history with the Empire, having served them during the Galactic Civil War before transitioning into a mercenary shortly afterward.
In their initial encounter, it’s crucial to recall that Migs explicitly informed Djarin he wasn’t a stormtrooper; instead, he was an accomplished Imperial marksman. Notably, there was a heart-wrenching incident in Migs Mayfeld’s past that could have been depicted in Andor season 2: the Ghorman Massacre.
Andor Season 2’s Ghorman Massacre Would Have Been Darkly Perfect For Mayfeld
The Slaughter Began With Sharpshooters
In the second season of Andor, it was revealed that the Empire sought a rare mineral called kalkite for their top-secret Death Star project. To obtain this mineral, they covertly fueled and instigated escalating tension and upheaval on Ghorman, thereby crafting a galaxy-wide narrative that portrayed the planet as chaotic and rebellious due to external troublemakers. This enabled the Empire to justify brutally suppressing peaceful protesters, who were then painted as violent insurgents. Consequently, they could destabilize the planet through widespread mining operations, all under the guise of restoring order.
Significantly, the aggression and bloodshed commenced when Imperial snipers positioned on rooftops received instructions to shoot at their fellow Imperials below, who were initially managing peaceful protesters. This scenario might remind you of a young Migs Mayfeld among these snipers, still a loyal Imperial carrying out orders. Yet, this wasn’t merely a casual appearance, as it could have also highlighted the intricate power struggles within an oppressive regime when its enforcers start questioning their allegiance (which, as we know from The Mandalorian, eventually occurred with Mayfeld).
A Mayfeld Cameo Would Have Had Purpose Beyond Fan Service
Preceding Burnin Konn and Operation: Cinder
In the second season of The Mandalorian, it’s disclosed that Operation: Cinder, a devastating bombardment campaign ordered by the late Emperor Palpatine, was the event that ultimately drove Migs Mayfeld to desert the Empire. This operation, which is detailed in Battlefront II and related literature and comics, resulted in the tragic loss of Migs’ division on Burnin Konn, including thousands of civilians. Few survived this incident, among them Migs and his commanding officer.
It would have been intriguing if Mayfeld had taken part in the Ghorman Massacre along with Andor, as this would have intensified Operation: Cinder later and given a hint of his past during the Empire’s rule. This cameo appearance from Mayfeld could have enriched both “The Mandalorian” and “Andor,” by introducing a recognizable character among the Imperials who carried out such a heinous act at the peak of the Empire’s power. Nevertheless, it remains captivating to speculate on what Migs’ Imperial career was like prior to Operation: Cinder.
