Viewers of “And Just Like That” should not anticipate Kim Cattrall’s character, Samantha Jones, appearing again in season 3. This new series, which serves as a continuation of the popular “Sex and the City” TV show, is set 17 years after the finale and brings back Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis). As they enter their 50s, these long-time friends encounter changes in their families, friendships, and romantic lives while navigating the next phase of their lives in New York City.
Previously marketed as an HBO miniseries, “And Just Like That” has carved out its own identity distinct from the original show “Sex and the City,” which has sparked much debate, with many viewing it as a step down from the initial series. Nevertheless, “And Just Like That” garnered a substantial audience on HBO, leading to the renewal of the series, and it’s been praised as one of the top TV show revivals in recent times. Despite making an appearance in the season 2 finale, Kim Cattrall’s character, Samantha Jones, will not reappear in “And Just Like That” for its upcoming third season.
Kim Cattrall’s Return In And Just Like That Season 2 Was Just For A Cameo
Cattrall Has Made It Clear That She Will Not Return For Season 3
A significant concern raised about the AJLT series was the lack of Samantha Jones, a gap largely attributed to the personal conflicts between Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, as well as the show’s producers. The storyline presented that since the occurrences in Sex and the City, Samantha had relocated to London, distancing herself from Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda. Despite the persistent disputes between Cattrall and the production team, fans of the show remained optimistic about Kim Cattrall reprising her role as Samantha Jones in And Just Like That.
In the final episode of season two, AJLT, Kim Cattrall unexpectedly appeared as her character, Samantha. During a phone call with Carrie, Samantha reminisced about their farewell dinner at an old apartment where they shared countless memories. She expressed a desire to “express her regards” for the flat. The conversation between them concluded with a reaffirmation of their friendship and Samantha blowing a kiss over the phone. Although this brief appearance hinted at a potential recurrence of Samantha in season 3, Kim Cattrall has stated that it will not come to fruition.
Convincing Kim Cattrall to reprise her role as Samantha in And Just Like That was no easy task, and it wasn’t until the season 2 finale that we managed to secure her cameo. Interestingly, this scene was filmed without any of my former co-stars from Sex and the City. Her return as Samantha underscores the unbroken bond she shares with Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte, but it seems highly improbable that we’ll see her reunite with her New York City friends in the future.
And Just Like That Season 3 Needs To Move On From Samantha Jones
It Doesn’t Look Like Kim Cattrall Will Ever Return To The Series Again
In the initial two seasons of “And Just Like That,” it’s been hinted that Kim Cattrall’s character, Samantha Jones, is no longer as tightly knit with Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda as she was in the original series. Despite occasional phone calls and messages, their close-knit friendship group seems to have changed since the events of “Sex and the City.” In response to a re-posted article on X (formerly Twitter), Kim Cattrall made it clear that there’s been no plan for her return to the franchise. This suggests that season 3 of “And Just Like That” may be focusing less on Samantha Jones potentially returning to New York City.
The information available about the third season of “And Just Like That” indicates that new characters will be joining the cast, such as Rosie O’Donnell, Jonathan Cake, Logan Marshall-Green, and Mehcad Brooks. In this upcoming season, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte are expected to delve deeper into their personal lives, particularly their romantic entanglements. The teaser trailer suggests that Carrie might rekindle her relationship with Aidan, hinting at a step forward in her healing process following Mr. Big’s demise in season 1. Regrettably, Kim Cattrall will not be returning to the series, but the intriguing plotlines for “And Just Like That” season three indicate that the show is ready to progress beyond Samantha Jones.
