Star Devon Sawa marks the anniversary of one of his first significant film roles, thirty years since its initial release.
30 years ago, on May 26th, Sawa marked the anniversary of the release of Casper (1995) by posting the original movie poster on social media. Without any captions, the message was clear to fans who expressed their affection for the classic film in the comments with an outpouring of love and appreciation.
One fan responded, “Are you subtly hinting that I’m getting older with this post? I don’t take kindly to that remark.
Another fan can hardly fathom, but it’s already been thirty years! Still ranks among my all-time favorite movies from my childhood!
Another fan noted, “Need this on 4K! One of my favorites.”
Casper Is Now 30 Years Old
1995’s film “Casper” was helmed by director Brad Silberling from a script penned by Sherri Stoner and Deanna Oliver, who were inspired by the popular Harvey Comics cartoon character, Casper the Friendly Ghost. The story revolves around Kat Harvey, a 13-year-old girl played by Christina Ricci, who is the daughter of widowed ghost therapist Dr. James Harvey, portrayed by Bill Pullman. He’s hired by Cathy Moriarty’s character, Catherine “Carrigan” Crittenden, to remove the spirits haunting the vast Whipstaff Manor she inherited from her deceased father. The film also showcases the voices of Joe Nipote, Brad Garrett, and Joe Alaskey as the Ghostly Trio – Stretch, Fatso, and Stinkie – while Malachi Pearson lends his voice to Casper himself.
In the touching finale of the movie, Casper briefly had an opportunity to join the world of the living, with Devon Sawa playing him in this scene. This was actually Devon Sawa’s second film after he played Junior Floyd in “Little Giants” in 1994. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics when it first came out, “Casper” proved to be a significant commercial success, earning over $288 million against a production budget of just $55 million during its initial cinema release.
The hit movie Casper sparked the creation of a series of sequels. In 1996, this took the form of “The Spooktacular New Adventures of Casper.” This film was followed by two direct-to-video spin-offs: “Casper: A Spirited Beginning” in 1997 and “Casper Meets Wendy” in 1998. The former served as a sort of prequel, while the latter marked Hilary Duff’s debut film and Catherine Moriarty’s second leading role in a Casper production. As of 2022, reports indicate that a new Casper movie is being planned, although specifics about the project have yet to be revealed.
