You don’t need to watch Smile to enjoy Smile 2
As a gamer who’s seen his fair share of horror movies, let me tell ya, the return of that grinning terror in Parker Finn’s masterpiece, ‘Smile 2’, is a chilling delight! The sequel takes the original’s best bits and cranks them up to eleven. Naomi Scott’s performance as a pop star battling the entity is nothing short of mesmerizing.
In Parker Finn’s outstanding continuation of his 2022 movie “Smile”, the chilling figure from our worst dreams reappears. Both films garnered praise from critics, yet the 2024 sequel often receives more acclaim due to its expansion upon what made “Smile” exceptional. Naomi Scott gives a remarkable portrayal as a struggling pop star who finds herself ensnared by this entity.
Now that “Smile 2” is accessible for rental and streaming on Paramount+, a multitude of fresh viewers will encounter the film for the first time. The large red ‘2’ in the title makes it challenging to overlook that this movie is a sequel. Those who missed the 2022 original may ponder whether they should watch it prior to enjoying “Smile 2.” However, you don’t strictly need to do so, although it’s recommended.
In the conclusion of the film Smile, we seamlessly transition into the start of Smile 2. Here, we learn about the fate of a significant character from the movie in the sequel’s opening scene. This scene is captivating as it marks Kyle Gallner’s reappearance as Joel. However, its primary purpose is to illustrate how the Smile curse shifts from Joel to another character portrayed by Lukas Gage, and eventually reaches the main female character of the sequel, Skye Riley (Scott).
If you haven’t watched the movie “Smile“, you can still follow along well at the start. And as for “Smile 2“, it develops its own narrative with Skye. In fact, you might find it even more engaging if you haven’t seen the first one because both films share a similar storyline structure, and the unexpected twists and turns will be more intriguing.
Instead, viewing “Smile 2” before “Smile” might leave you feeling underwhelmed when revisiting the original. Although “Smile 2” is an outstanding horror film, it significantly escalates the storyline, gore, and psychological terrors, making the first movie seem less intense by comparison. On the bright side, watching the sequel first will help you grasp its beginning more easily.
Essentially, it’s usually beneficial to watch the first film before the second one in most cases, but when it comes to “Smile 2”, you aren’t strictly required to do so. You can dive right in and still understand the excitement surrounding it.
Regardless of the choice you make, it’s going to be a fantastic experience. The good thing is that both “Smile” and “Smile 2” are now available on Paramount+. So, if you wish, you can enjoy an amazing double feature!
