You can now watch the action movies Escape Plan, starring Sylvester Stallone and Dave Bautista, on Prime Video. The Escape Plan series has an interesting backstory: the first movie, released in 2013, brought longtime rivals Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger together on screen. They played fellow prisoners who work together to break out of a supposedly inescapable, high-tech prison.
The movie earned nearly $138 million globally, which was a solid, though not phenomenal, result. This success was enough to secure approval for two follow-up films. Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t reprise his role in Escape Plan 2: Hades, and instead, Dave Bautista joined the cast as a longtime friend of Sylvester Stallone’s character, Ray Breslin, a specialist in escaping from secure facilities.
Sylvester Stallone & Dave Bautista’s Escape Plan Trilogy Is Streaming Now On Prime
As a film buff, I was excited to see the whole Escape Plan trilogy is now streaming on Prime Video! While it’s maybe not Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger’s most famous series, the second film, from 2018, really grabbed me. It centers around Ray’s young apprentice getting snatched and thrown into this unbelievably brutal, high-tech prison called HADES – basically, inmates are forced to fight to the death. The movie’s a real race against time as Ray and his crew try to rescue him.
The sequel, Escape Plan 2, wasn’t successful with critics or at the box office, earning less money than it cost to make. Sylvester Stallone even called it “terrible.” This likely motivated him to be more involved in the third film, Escape Plan: The Extractors.
This action movie from 2019 features the heroes tracking down the vengeful son of a former business rival. Their mission takes a unique turn – instead of escaping from prison, they have to break into one. Directed by John Hertzfeld, a longtime friend of Stallone, the film is a noticeable step up from Hades, and benefits from not having overly high expectations.
Dave Bautista Only Made Escape Plan To Work With Sylvester Stallone
Bautista admitted he wasn’t a huge fan of the Escape Plan sequels, but he took the job because he really wanted to work with Sylvester Stallone. Stallone is one of Bautista’s heroes, and he enjoyed being able to ask him all sorts of questions like a dedicated fan while on set.
Interestingly, both Sylvester Stallone and Dave Bautista have appeared in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequels, in addition to their work on Escape Plan. This means they’ve only collaborated on the second and third movies within those respective series, which is a somewhat unique situation.
Although the third movie was better received and more financially successful than Escape Plan 2 – especially given its small $3.6 million budget – it didn’t generate much demand for a sequel. As a result, there’s been no talk of Escape Plan 4 in recent years.
Bringing Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Bautista together for another film would be a big deal, but Escape Plan doesn’t have the same recognition as The Expendables series. However, it’s still worth watching if you’re a fan of these actors, just as a fun, interesting piece of work.
