You Can See ‘Clown in a Cornfield’ at Drive-Ins Before Its Official Premiere
On May 9, 2025, horror enthusiasts worldwide can catch the highly anticipated “killer clown” film in theaters, thanks to Shudder and RLJE Films. But for those eager fans, there’s an opportunity a week earlier: on select drive-ins nationwide, Clown in a Cornfield will make its premiere.
According to Variety, Eli Craig’s movie adaptation based on Adam Cesare’s novel is set to premiere at drive-ins on the weekend of May 2nd and 3rd. Lucky ticket buyers who manage to secure a pass for these initial showings will also receive an exclusive poster as a bonus, and tickets are already available in certain locations. The following drive-in theaters have scheduled these early screenings:
- The Galaxy Drive-In in Ennis, TX
- The Four Bros Drive-In in Amenia, NY
- The West Wind Drive-In in Sacramento, CA, Glendale, AZ and Las Vegas, NV.
The movie titled “Clown in a Cornfield” features Katie Douglass, Carson MacCormac, Kevin Durand, Will Sasso, Aaron Abrams, and Cassandra Potenza, among other talented actors. This production is overseen by Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, veterans from the “Smile” team. The screenplay was written by Craig and Carter Blanchard, with inspiration drawn from the YA novel of the same name by Adam Cesare, which won the 2020 Bram Stoker Award for Best Young Adult Novel. Even before its publication, Temple Hill Entertainment had already acquired the rights to turn it into a feature film.
The movie chronicles the story of Quinn, a 16-year-old girl who’s recently relocated with her dad, the new doctor, to Kettle Springs – a quaint little town. Luckily for Quinn, she swiftly finds companionship among some friends, yet their actions don’t meet paternal approval. One night, as Quinn slips out to attend a party during the yearly festivities, an unexpected visitor shows up: Frendo the Clown, the town mascot. But unlike the jovial costume character you might imagine, this Frendo is armed with a chainsaw and has a murderous intent towards all teenagers in Kettle Springs.
The book has been likened to ’80s slasher movies, featuring a merciless masked murderer, teenagers in distress, and a captivating blend of terror and humor. It has done exceptionally well, with Cesare already penning and releasing two follow-ups titled “Clown in the Cornfield 2: Frendo Returns” and “Clown in the Cornfield 3: The Temple of Frendo“. Could “Clown in the Cornfield” potentially kickstart a whole series? Time will tell based on its performance at the box office.
‘Clown in a Cornfield’ Is Not Your Average Killer Clown Movie
In essence, it’s safe to say that this film surpasses every horror norm known to man, yet there’s a hidden depth beneath the creative slaughters, amusing quips, and common adolescent struggles. If Clown in the Cornfield adheres to the book’s plot, you’ll encounter an unexpected twist that sheds light on many things, but it will also leave you puzzled as you attempt to decipher who’s hidden beneath the mask. It’s not a traditional whodunit, but rather a “whydunit,” and when you uncover the motive behind the emotionless Frendo mask, you’ll concur with Cesare’s powerful, gripping, and pertinent commentary about American values run amok.
