Yoda's Master from Star Wars Legends is canon again!

As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who has grown up with the saga, this recent revelation about Yoda’s master, N’Kata Del Gormo, is nothing short of thrilling! It’s like uncovering a hidden gem in the galaxy far, far away.

In an unexpected twist, I found myself utterly captivated by a fresh revelation concerning everyone’s favorite Jedi Master, Yoda, in the latest Star Wars novel focusing on Mace Windu.

Through the YouTube channel “Star Wars Explained,” it’s been disclosed that Yoda’s original Jedi master, N’Kata Del Gormo from Star Wars Legends, has now been acknowledged as part of the official Star Wars universe! This is due to a mention in the novel “Star Wars Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss.” However, it’s important to note that this “canon” status comes with a small caveat.

According to Alex Damon’s video, it was said that Yoda began his training in an ancient tale, set in the Extended Universe timeline. It is believed that he had a crash landing on a planet within the Hysalria system, where he encountered N’Kata Del Gormo. Master Del Gormo then accepted young Yoda as his padawan until the Republic came to rescue him later.

In comparison to the expanded universe (Legends), the latest canon isn’t as elaborate with its details. When Mace stepped into Yoda’s residence, he spotted a sand sculpture that depicted the Hysalria system. This reminded him of the ancient lore surrounding Yoda’s tutelage and his former master, N’Kata Del Gormo. Interestingly, while Mace was present, Yoda altered the sculpture to resemble a rose instead. As Damon points out in his video, this subtle change maintains the mystery of Yoda’s past.

There has always been an air of mystery around Yoda. His species doesn’t even have a name. Even with later additions to his people like Yaddle and Grogu, there are still plenty we don’t know about him. Though, one thing from Legends is still canon:

Yoda’s unique speech pattern is due to the teachings of Master Del Gormo, explaining why Yaddle spoke differently in “Tales of the Jedi.” As Damon highlights, this was a decision taken by Frank Oz, the original puppeteer of Yoda. We’ll find out which way Grogu will follow.
