Now that Yellowstone has finished, the story continues with its new spinoff series. The show has been quickly renewed for a second season, and it seems the next season will do something different from what fans usually expect from Taylor Sheridan‘s work.
Luke Grimes will reprise his role as Kayce Dutton from Yellowstone in the new series Marshals. In a recent interview, Grimes discussed the upcoming season’s production, stating that filming is expected to begin in May 2026. He also mentioned that Season 2 will have more than the 13 episodes that comprised Season 1.
Grimes indicated the final number isn’t certain yet, but it will likely be either 18 or 20, and those involved seem pleased with the options.
A Taylor Sheridan TV Trend Is Broken
Taylor Sheridan’s TV shows usually have shorter seasons. While the final season of Yellowstone had 14 episodes, all previous seasons and his other series—like 1883, 1923, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and Landman—typically have 10 episodes or fewer.
The strong viewership of Marshals likely led to the show being renewed for a longer second season. The premiere episode was the most-watched debut for a new network series without a football game leading in since 2017, when Young Sheldon first aired. Nielsen reported 9.52 million viewers tuned in for the premiere, making it the highest-rated debut of any new series during the 2025-26 television season. Within a week, the premiere episode reached a total of 20.6 million viewers across all platforms.
Luke Grimes Returns a Kayce Dutton in Marshals
The new series, Marshals, continues the story begun in Yellowstone, mainly focusing on Kayce Dutton, a former Navy SEAL who now works with the U.S. Marshals to keep Montana safe. Familiar faces from Yellowstone like Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty, and Gil Birmingham also appear. Joining them are new cast members Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, and Tatanka Means.
Filming is underway for Dutton Ranch, a new series continuing the story after Yellowstone. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser will return as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, and they’ll be joined by Annette Bening, Ed Harris, and Jai Courtney. The first season of Dutton Ranch is expected to have nine episodes, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
As a TV critic, I’ve been keeping up with Marshals, and here’s the deal: new episodes drop every Sunday on CBS. If you miss one, or just want to binge-watch, Paramount+ has you covered – they add episodes the very day after they air on TV. It’s a pretty convenient setup for staying current with the show.
