Yellowstone star Kelly Reilly reveals how Beth Dutton rubs off on her as the British-born actress shares she used to be ‘shy’
As I delve into the captivating life story of Kelly Reilly, a seasoned actress who has graced our screens for three decades, I am struck by her remarkable journey and the depth of her character. Her transformation from a working actor to an in-demand leading lady is nothing short of extraordinary, yet she remains grounded and humble, emphasizing that her life remains “normie” at heart.
Actress Kelly Reilly, renowned for her portrayal of the sharp-tongued Montana financial expert Beth Dutton in the series Yellowstone, graces the front page of a well-known magazine.
The British-born beauty is the star of the December 2024/January 2025 issue of Town & Country.
Initially, Kelly admitted that she was initially ‘nervous’ or ‘afraid’ when portraying a ruthless character like John Dutton’s daughter; however, over time, the role appears to have influenced her as well.
In my own words, as a lifestyle guide, I’d say: “Beth has undeniably empowered me to stand stronger in life. Before her, I never thought I could confidently enter a room and make an impact. Now, I face rooms with less fear.
And she has fun with Beth.
Reilly wondered, “Aren’t a lot of acting techniques based on understanding a character’s psychology?” He continued, “It feels like searching for hidden clues to uncover who this person truly is.
She is very unlike Beth as she describes her home life with her husband as ‘boring.’
Additionally, she opts for fruit smoothies rather than vodka drinks for her morning meal, and takes great pleasure in strolling through the beautiful English countryside.
Reilly shared that he really enjoys getting ready to play against Beth, as she brings a thrilling, invigorating energy to the game,” (paraphrased)
‘But it’s also incredibly gnarly. I have to hide all of me away to put some of that on. I love her, but I can’t live with her.’
Kelly, residing in both the English countryside and New York City, commented: “Beth’s boldness is inspiringly fierce. I believe that’s why many women admire her so much.
Prior to the release of “Yellowstone,” the actress who portrayed the quintessentially American character, Beth, managed to keep a low profile, thus going unnoticed by many that she was actually a prominent British actor.
The siren remarked, “I value my solitude greatly. I prefer keeping my location, activities, and personal matters hidden from others. In this era of excessive sharing, choosing to keep silent seems almost revolutionary.
In the magazine she said that people don’t want her, they want Beth.
Reilly revealed that they were invited to participate on the Cameo platform, receiving a substantial amount of money in return for recording custom videos for fans.
‘But they don’t want me going on as me. They want Beth Dutton telling them to go f*** themselves.’
In 2017 she almost quit Hollywood.
She admits that despite her deep affection for her job, it occasionally poses difficulties she doesn’t believe she can handle. Instead, what she yearns for is to return to theater and perform in two or three productions annually while living a tranquil life. This option didn’t seem like a consolation prize; it felt like the lifestyle she desired herself.
Then came Yellowstone.
As I was organizing our move, I stumbled upon it and thought, “Uh-oh, that’s trouble.” It seemed to set the stage for something intriguing, igniting my curiosity.
Creator Taylor Sheridan gave her the part. ‘I didn’t even audition. Then I was like, “F***, I didn’t audition.” I was terrified, because I didn’t know how I was going to do it. And it took me a minute to find her.’
In the interview, Kelly shared that she was ‘shy’ growing up but blossomed when she started acting.
Experiencing it was akin to being under the influence of a powerful drug. Nothing else had ever given me such an intense sensation. The raw, profound emotion displayed by actors on stage during serious plays was unlike anything I’d seen before. It felt sacred, as if we were all partaking in a spiritual journey through art, connecting and healing as humans. I found myself yearning to join them under the big top at the circus. I longed for that shared experience.
At the age of seventeen, she landed her first professional role, acting alongside Helen Mirren in the British series Prime Suspect, a police procedural drama.
Initially, she performed on stage and subsequently starred in the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, as well as the Sherlock Holmes movies from 2009 and 2011, where she acted alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.
Her Hollywood break came in 2012 with Flight starring Denzel Washington.
Now she is starring as a housewife in Here with Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, and Paul Bettany.
Next she is spending the next few months in Wales filming Under Salt Marsh.
The show is a crime series where she portrays an ex-detective, and she mentioned, “A fresh role provides room for another compelling female character.
Kelly would not comment if there will be another season of Yellowstone.
She only expressed her interest as follows: ‘I am undeniably drawn to Beth, and I’m curious about her after certain events. What is she like in a peaceful state? As an actor, I can’t help but think, “Wow, I want to explore that.” Isn’t it intriguing to imagine Beth undergoing therapy?’
The tale is set for publication in the December 2024/January 2025 edition of Town & Country. The images are captured by Sebastian Kim.
This comes after she told the BBC that her success ‘hasn’t happened overnight.’
The actress has already been in many big-budget productions like True Detective.
Speaking as a fortunate actress who has recently found herself in high demand, largely due to my role on Yellowstone, let me tell you that it didn’t just happen suddenly. At 47 years old, it’s been a gradual process, so I’m not exactly getting whiplash from the sudden change of pace.
She added: ‘I have been a working actor for 30 years.
It’s certainly not missed by me that there’s a unique show, one with global success, and a character within it that has attracted so much attention or fascination.
‘But I treat it at arm’s length. I don’t spend too much time thinking about it.’
Reilly then insisted that she is a normie at heart.
She mentioned that her life is quite ordinary, and she values this normality greatly. What sets her apart now is being extraordinarily occupied,” she stated.
‘I don’t get to sleep at home very often, which is annoying because I love home!’
She is also happily married to Kyle Baugher; they wed in 2012.
Kelly stated that she hadn’t engaged with the media prior to the start of Yellowstone, as she desired for viewers to believe in her character authentically.
Kelly mentioned that people seem to engage with Beth as if she were a genuine individual, and we all discuss her as though she exists in real life.
In every encounter, there might be a slight disappointment as people get to know me. For instance, at the local bakery, the woman expressed, “I’d enjoy having a chat with you.
‘I know what she means – she wants to drink with Beth. People want to feel part of that energy… someone so connected with their primal self.
Not only are we estranged, but we seem to be engrossed in our phones and social media. It feels as though an event isn’t real unless it’s snapped for a photo. However, Beth stands out; she’s genuinely vibrant and full of life.
