Yellowstone season 5 episode 9 recap: Desire Is All You Need
As a longtime fan of the Yellowstone saga, I must say that this season has been nothing short of gripping. Each episode unfolds like a chapter in a thrilling western novel, with twists and turns that keep me on the edge of my seat.
At last, Yellowstone has returned following almost two years of fan anticipation. A touch of impatience, yet that’s understandable, isn’t it?
Fans are eagerly waiting for Montana’s first family to reappear on our screens once more, as Taylor Sheridan’s writing never fails to impress. Each episode brings a wealth of action and gripping drama that has made Sunday nights less enjoyable without it. The Dutton family, known for their resilience and love, continue to face adversity and overcome their foes through the years. Will they manage to break free from oppression once more?
2024’s much-anticipated debut unfolds with Lloyd stepping out from the barn, gazing across the ranch. As a seasoned cowboy, he’s weathered both the highs and lows this place has to offer. His expression betrayed an undercurrent of emotion, hinting at apprehension not only for the ranch’s fate but also for the cherished family he’s grown attached to over the years.
The beauty of Montana is still so unmatched. Even in the darkest hours, it gives hope. But that hope is quickly diminished by what comes next. For what seems like an eternity fans have been speculating about the fate of John Dutton, and all those fears came to a stopping point. The truth has been revealed and the legend that is John Dutton has come to an end.
As I leap from the vehicle with an overwhelming sense of dread, the Governor’s mansion is buzzing with detectives and officers. The air seems heavy with uncertainty, and I can’t shake off a feeling that my dad, my dear old man, has left us.
Upon Kayce and Beth’s arrival, their worst apprehensions swiftly manifest. The scene is awash with blood, splattered on walls and bedsheets. John’s lifeless body is found in a separate room where a forensic unit is gathering evidence. Clad only in a t-shirt and boxers, the family patriarch remains motionless.
Move over Meryl Streep
In this episode, Kelly Reilly delivers an exceptional performance that truly captures Beth’s feelings during a tragic moment. Every emotion – tears, screams, fear, and rage – resonates powerfully on screen. Reilly’s portrayal leaves no doubt in the viewer’s mind. With John’s departure, Beth stands out brilliantly among all other characters.
It was a sight even Kayce didn’t want to see. He tries to hold Beth back from it, but she needed to know for sure. It’s not long before she collapses onto the stairs, embraced by the one good brother she has left. She knows it was Jamie. She doesn’t know how or why, but she knows he was the man behind it.
Upon hearing the news, Jamie appears shocked and close to grief, yet it’s unclear why this is the case. After all, he had been the one attempting to impeach his father to secure his dream position, and he also had a deal with Sarah Atwood for the assassination of that very man.
Time of death 3:53
At 3:53 a.m., John Dutton tragically took his own life, a fact that leaves Jamie utterly shocked, and rightfully so.
Initially, I wasn’t sure if his display was an act or if he genuinely felt remorseful. When he confides the information to Lynelle, she advises Jamie not to reveal it during the press conference. Of course, Lynelle is unaware when she inquires whether Jamie thinks it was a suicide. It does seem unusual for someone who had a romantic history with John to ask such a question.
As a gamer, I’ve seen Jamie in action more than anyone else. That’s why I’m certain he’s the one who did this. Unlike Kayce, I’ve witnessed Jamie at his most ruthless. It wasn’t just the man he killed, but he also destroyed everything that John had worked for. Every accomplishment, every memorable moment… all taken away. He did it out of revenge and a twisted sense of justice because he believed he was wronged.
The love a father
Despite his rugged demeanor, Rip occasionally had endearing instances that left women charmed. While in Texas, along with the other cowhands, Rip was releasing the horses. Upon encountering a family, he gently lifted their small child so they could stroke his horse, showing a tender side.
In the latter part of the show, Rip finds himself some nice antique spurs, made by Billy Clapper, which he intends to give to Carter. These spurs are perfect for the Texas prairie, and Billy graciously hands them over. What a kind-hearted fellow, isn’t he?
In earlier Season 5, discussions about moving to the East Camp arose between Kayce and Monica, with John initiating the conversation. Given that Monica was the one who held the reins in their relationship, John sought to keep his son at a distance while still maintaining proximity, ensuring both safety and some semblance of normal life.
Monica is deeply enamored with it, finding it secluded and distant enough from the ranch to feel like their private haven. Tate concurs, expressing his disapproval towards his parents’ excessive displays of affection. It’s heartening to observe Kayce and Monica in a state of tranquility and contentment, following the trials they faced earlier in season 5.
As the story unfolds, it’s clear that Sarah Atwood is the one responsible for John’s death. She arranges a meeting to deal with the consequences of her plan. They consider suicide as the most plausible explanation. Sarah is unsure if the public will accept this version, given John’s history of good mental health and his lifelong determination. Caroline Warner has unleashed a monster that Beth must now confront.
Welcome to Texas boys…and Teeter
Simultaneously in Texas, Rip is joined by half of his bunkhouse companions at the 6666 ranch. Without delay, they start teasing Jimmy, reminiscent of old days. I believe viewers could’ve skipped several scenes explaining politically correct names. We’re already aware of that. The dialogue doesn’t seem like something typical cowboys would discuss.
It seems uncertain if everyone desired the knowledge that Gator owned a substantial amount of Vaseline. Perhaps it’s best if we limit our shared knowledge in this manner.
It was your dream, not mine
It’s when Sarah and Jamie interact directly that more truths seem to surface. Jamie’s tears, however, are as fake as a crocodile’s – it’s safe to say fans collectively groaned at this performance. Once again, he attempts to present himself as an innocent party unaware of Sarah’s command. Yet, it’s important to remember that Jamie was the one who pushed for his father to face severe consequences. Sarah offered assistance in that scheme. Now that the act has been carried out, he feigns shock and indignation. Let’s save everyone from his manufactured emotions.
If I hadn’t expected anyone’s words to align with mine, it was certainly Sarah’s. Yet, she turned out to be right when she stated this was what Jamie desired. His animosity towards John, his supposedly absent father, ran deep, and he manipulated Sarah for her resources. Now, on the verge of achieving everything he yearned for, his conscience starts to assert itself, causing him to falter. This indecisiveness is, without a doubt, the most frustrating aspect of Jamie – he can’t commit to a side, and whenever he tries, he wavers.
At last, we caught a peek of Rainwater and Mo, both exhibiting obvious worry regarding the construction of the pipeline beneath the water. I had assumed that Lynelle and Rainwater were united in their opposition to this project. But now, I’m questioning whether Lynelle can be relied upon without John’s counsel. The evidence isn’t entirely reassuring.
Yellowstone season 5 episode 9: Walker was made for this
This season seems tailor-made for Walker. It’s wonderful to watch him and the gang traversing the west with Texas’ finest. Being familiar with the region, he appears incredibly unfettered. Remarkably, he has managed to avoid irritating Rip so far.
I do love the Quanah Parker mention from Walker. He was never a chief but was appointed by the government as principal chief of the entire Comanche Nation. Walker then goes on to talk about how some of the greatest pioneers and settlers walked this great Texas land. He has such love and admiration for those who came before him. It was a joy to see a light in his eyes I’ve never seen before.
If you’ve been pondering about who will inherit the ranch, your guess of Tate is correct. Kayce serves as the executor, but the main concern lies with Jamie attempting to rescind the conservation agreement. Kayce harbors serious doubts that his father took his own life; Beth shares this conviction. The only daughter is convinced, beyond any reasonable doubt, that Jamie was involved in some way, shape, or form. This wasn’t a single act; he lacks the courage for it.
Beth encourages Kayce to summon the state police by phoning them. As the actual cause of death gets verified, further doubts surface. The monitoring device at John’s time of death inexplicably fails to function. Beth presses Kayce to confront Jamie for the truth, then return home and assist her in deciding how to execute him. At this juncture, it seems unavoidable. Now that the king has been deposed, a hero will emerge from the ruins.
As only five episodes remain, you’ll definitely want to catch up on the exciting twists and turns of Montana’s first family. Tune in next Sunday at 8 p.m ET on Paramount Network to experience an unforgettable journey.
