Yellowstone season 5 episode 13 recap: Give The World Away
As a long-time fan and follower of the Yellowstone saga, I must say that this season finale left me feeling like a cowboy who just rode back to his ranch after a long, hard day. The emotions were running high, the stakes were set, and the characters delivered performances that would make even John Dutton himself proud.
In the second-to-last episode of Yellowstone, titled “Give the World Away”, events unfold at the Yellowstone ranch as preparations are made for an auction. With John Dutton now absent, Beth has assumed control and is ensuring that everything, from the boys to the property itself, is polished and immaculate in anticipation of the sale.
Beth and Rip hold contrasting views regarding the business strategy for the ranch. While Rip acknowledges that their current approach with cattle might not generate enough revenue to cover taxes, Beth seems to be taking a more pragmatic approach, aiming to maintain the vision of John’s dream for the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. In essence, Rip’s ideas are idealistic and reminiscent of his mentor’s, which isn’t necessarily negative as he has acquired all his knowledge from John. However, this same idealism might be the reason the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is facing its current challenges.
Travis will soon be bringing the rest of the horses back to sell, but he’s going to sell the big money horses down south. He’s selling one later in the day and Beth hops on a jet to oversee the sale. Rip was not keen on Beth going there and being alone with Travis. He would screw Beth in front of Rip if given the chance, according to Rip. He seems nonchalant about the image, which is strange. Beth is worried that Travis would screw them in the deal, even though Rip assures her he would never. Nonetheless, she heads off and promises she’ll see him tonight.
Mo and Thomas watch as the drilling of the pipeline persists. Their eyes widen in astonishment as they observe the work being done. Regrettably, there’s no way for them to halt it. “The power lies with the people now,” Thomas confides in him.
Mo ponders what action their folks might take, and Rainwater explains that without pipes, it’s impossible to construct a pipeline. Though it might sound like starting a conflict, they’ve been accustomed to warfare for more than 160 years.
Thomas informs Mo, “We’ve ceased hostilities on our end.” In dire circumstances, extreme actions may become necessary.
Jamie Dutton’s world is in shambles
As a devoted follower, I’m finding it increasingly clear from media coverage that Governor John Dutton met an untimely end due to the controversy surrounding the scrapping of a multi-billion dollar community project, backed by one of the world’s leading private equity giants. Some speculate Jamie could be the culprit, yet even Chief Counsel Ellis voices his doubts during a meeting, suggesting if it were him, Atwood, not John Dutton, would have been the target instead.
Ellis quickly places a call and starts considering the need to engage an external agency, as it’s becoming evident that Sarah Atwood might have been part of the situation. However, before he could complete the call, Detective Dillard enters along with the FBI, preparing to search Sarah’s office for potential evidence.
In the meantime, Jamie is sprawled on his couch, deeply distraught following the loss of his girlfriend. It seems more like depression as he grapples with the disintegration of his life. The news has been abuzz that Jamie, the attorney general, was in a relationship with Sarah Atwood, and they were discovered at the Deerfield Club. Evidence hinting towards this has surfaced. You might recall Beth using her detective skills earlier in season 5. She must have secretly sent that evidence over. Even then, she suspected Jamie of being involved in something underhanded. We surely appreciate a shrewd woman like Beth.
In this situation, Jamie, who supports the project, finds himself in a difficult position due to John’s strong opposition. It’s known that he could gain from a land lease at the project site. Not long after realizing that Beth is orchestrating this, he quickly contacts her, once he has this realization.
Jamie believes he’s in a powerful position due to knowing the family’s hidden truths, but this might not be as accurate as he thinks. He warns Beth that if she brings him down, she’ll bring ruin upon the entire Dutton family. The ranch’s reputation, their name, and her own freedom would all be at stake. However, Beth swiftly corrects him, pointing out that his identity no longer belongs to him alone, and soon the world will learn the truth about it.
It’s highly likely that if Beth manages to bring down Jamie, his actions could also tarnish the Dutton family name. With just one episode left in the series, it seems Jamie’s fate is sealed and he may not survive long enough to reveal everyone’s secrets. Regardless, Beth intends to fulfill her promise and expose what Jamie has done. First, though, the truth about Jamie’s actions will come to light.
Is it alright if we discuss the breathtaking scenery that Montana offers? With its majestic green mountains crowned with a light dusting of snow, it’s a sight that will be deeply missed. I can see why John Dutton was so determined to protect it.
Following Kayce’s action of giving a warning, as he had pledged, he goes back to Monica. Curious, Monica asks about the incident, and Kayce explains that he demonstrated to those who targeted his father’s legacy what would befall anyone who threatens her or their family. Now, it seems they are understood. With this understanding, Kayce and Monica can depart in tranquility and security, free from the perils that once pursued them. However, Monica is left wondering if this is their new path. It seems Kayce has some grand plans he’s yet to share with his spouse.
The wagon boss and widow return
As Jake, Ryan, Walker, and Teeter return from Texas, the greeting is warm yet tinged with sadness. Coming home without Colby makes Teeter’s heart ache in a complex way, one that can only be described as bittersweet. Ryan prepares himself to console Teeter, but surprisingly, it’s Walker who takes the lead in this difficult conversation. It’s amazing how much he’s grown. I believe he felt it would be too much for him emotionally and he needed time to cope with his own sorrow.
In a different phrasing, Lloyd expresses his opinion that they should have euthanized the horse earlier, to which Walker responds by stating there’s no use in harboring animosity towards the horse. The horse was just living according to its inherent nature. Not every horse can be domesticated, and not every horse needs to be untamed. Walker explains that Colby’s fate had already been sealed before he realized it had occurred.
It’s clear that the majority of responsibility appears to rest with Rip rather than Carter in this situation. While their job is inherently risky, it seems as if these types of accidents have a tendency to befall Rip consistently, almost as if he carries an unfortunate streak of bad luck.
Lloyd communicates to Teeter that Beth wasn’t allowed to send everything, instead he gives Teeter Colby’s hat. It was a tender and poignant moment. As she places it on her head, it symbolizes carrying Colby’s affection with her. However, there’s no room for sorrow at the moment; it’s necessary to work while there is still some strength left.
For the first time since they were in Texas, Ryan and Rip meet up again. Ryan hands over a check to Rip, explaining it should cover a significant portion of their taxes. However, unfortunately, the amount isn’t enough to make much of a difference. Ryan then asks about their future plans. Rip informs him that there isn’t a well-structured plan at the moment, but they can expect mainly manual labor jobs at Yellowstone. He intends to keep Carter and Lloyd on board, while the rest of the team should have no trouble finding suitable employment with other outfits.
Ryan has made significant progress from when he initially set foot on Yellowstone as a young cowboy. Now, he holds the position of wagon boss, which adds to his professional achievements. However, it’s not the satisfaction of advancement that he experiences, but rather a sense of being reminded how swiftly life passes by.
Beth approaches Travis’ premises, spotting his flag immediately. “Well, I guess that’s expected from someone like him,” she muses quietly to herself. A cluster of Brazilians are present for the sale, growing restless since they can’t find Travis. Determined, she heads towards the main house in search of the self-important boss. Quite unexpectedly, she discovers him engaged in a game of strip poker with several young women.
The excessively self-assured horse trainer, absorbed in his own world, seems to have misplaced track of time. Eventually, Beth alerts him that potential buyers are present. Interestingly, she also encounters Travis’ girlfriend, leaving her taken aback as he leads a lifestyle reminiscent of a western-style Pavarotti.
At the arena, Travis starts demonstrating horse riding skills. He’s arguably the most arrogant and misogynistic individual Beth has come across in her life. She shares this opinion with his girlfriend, curious about what attracts her to him. The girlfriend inquires, “Have you ever witnessed him ride?” As Beth watches him, she starts to grasp the allure – it seems he can sway his hips as if no one else could.
Craftily, Travis disguises a group of maintenance workers as potential buyers, thereby causing the Brazilians’ prices to escalate during bidding. Remarkably, this strategy proves successful, resulting in the sale of the horse for a whopping 3 million dollars.
They sure know how to have fun in Texas, but it becomes a little off-putting. We knew Travis was a horn dog, I don’t know that we needed an entire episode to prove it. This may be what you can look forward to in a 4 Sixes spinoff but it just felt like an extension of Taylor Sheridan’s life. Don’t get me wrong it looks fascinating but it didn’t feel like Yellowstone.
Yellowstone season 5 episode 13 ending explained
At the auction, Charlie Ferguson arrives at the ranch – thanks to Rip’s arrangement, who wanted to ensure a fitting farewell. Later, he informs Lloyd that he wants him to remain on the property. Lloyd questions if there’s any reason to stick around. Rip explains they will rebuild it when the time comes. Lloyd has been part of this place for 43 years; it’s his home. He was reluctant to leave, but appreciated Rip’s loyalty. (Word count: 80)
In Jamie’s realm, he turns to his former partner, the mother of his child, for assistance. He deceitfully claims innocence regarding his father’s demise. Her agreement to help is solely due to their shared parenthood, and she instructs him to conduct a press conference, where he should fabricate stories about any extramarital affair and implicate himself in no part of the incident.
As a dedicated follower of this unfolding saga, I find myself questioning Christina’s discernment skills. In her role as attorney general, one would expect her to spot inconsistencies in Jamie’s narrative swiftly. The fact that he didn’t act immediately on Sarah’s alleged involvement, despite claiming no involvement himself, is a glaring omission. It’s a query that should have raised red flags for Christina. It seems Jamie may have neglected to mention the part where he instructed Atwood to proceed with whatever it was they were discussing, regardless of whether he considered it a casual conversation or not.
She continues to explain to him, emphasizing that your collaboration with her was solely focused on restoring development. She encourages him to refute any baseless rumors suggesting an affair based on prejudice, and expresses admiration for his father and his affection for Montana. It’s important for him to speak out against such speculation to avoid appearing complicit, though he may indeed be. She wants to make it clear that this was a violation of their liberty, and she vows to seek justice on their behalf. However, this seems like an unrealistic promise.
Beth returns after trauma in Texas
After being captivated by Travis, Beth returns with a playful demeanor that hints at confusion over Rip’s friendship with him. In response, Rip recounts an old story about a bar brawl from 20 years ago. A man had harassed the woman he was dating, refusing to back down despite Rip’s warnings. Eventually, Rip intervened and taught the man a lesson by knocking him out cold. Interestingly, Travis stepped in to defend the man during the fight, and they both ended up with some bruises but have remained friends ever since.
Monica and Beth now share a bond stronger than ever, reminiscent of sisterhood. She queries Beth if their earnings will suffice for the taxes. Unfortunately, they won’t even come close, she replies. However, the income does help pay off the mortgage, which in turn handles the taxes. Yet, it won’t last. They’ll eventually need to sell parts of their land to cover the mortgage debt. Alas, there seems to be no long-term solution. It merely postpones the problem.
Beth plans to hold the funeral immediately following the auction, inviting only her closest friends and relatives. It’s a personal service solely for him. Following this, the estate sale will commence promptly.
As The Turnpike Troubadours begin to play, cowboys converse about positions that are open to hired hands. Walker yearns to return to Texas, but Jimmy mentions that only married men are hired at the camps by the sixes, to prevent them from chasing after all the veterinary technicians. At present, the only bunkhouse boys with a favorable outcome seem to be Walker and Lloyd.
Beth lets the bartender know to make the drinks light tonight and double them up for tomorrow. It’s a two-day auction and they have to save a little money. Beth then has a really big moment of growth when she eyes Lynelle, and invites her to attend John’s funeral.
In their teenage years, John and Lynelle were often seen cruising around town and engaging in various activities. One unusual discussion about John’s past sexual experiences ensued. Discussing such matters with anyone would typically feel awkward, but not for Beth. Curiously, she inquired whether Lynelle was acquainted with her mother. Indeed, Lynelle was well-acquainted with her mother. It remains unclear if Beth’s question was meant to remind Lynelle that John had a strong affection for her mother, or if it served some other purpose.
Kayce and Monica engage in a delightful dance together. Deep down, he hasn’t revealed his major plans to Monica yet, but he believes they will succeed and are the correct course of action – not only for them, but for everyone involved. He could very well be the hero their family needs.
Yellowstone: It’s transplant-bashing time
As the story progresses, Beth’s heart grows increasingly compassionate. She recognizes the suffering in Teeter, a feeling she knows all too well. In response, she proposes taking Teeter to the Deerfield Club to give the out-of-towners a piece of her mind. Beth displays her skills, not only for her own comfort but also for Teeter’s, as a means of expressing herself and providing solace.
Beth reads a hapless individual named Aaron. Teeter is deeply captivated, possibly with a touch of apprehension. She hadn’t realized she had psychic abilities and accused her of being a witch. Teeter attempts to replicate the act but comically falls short. I don’t think she fully grasps the situation. However, she expresses gratitude towards Beth for taking her out and giving it a try. They both have an empty space in their hearts, intertwined for eternity by sorrow.
On the second day of the auction, both John and Colby were given special recognition. This heartfelt moment was significant not just for the characters but also for the audience, as a poignant tribute was paid.
Let’s all continue standing as we pay tribute to a man who devoted his life to safeguarding our way of existence. Just like we honor a cowboy who sacrificed himself for the land and livestock that sustains us, dear Lord, we acknowledge that you have already welcomed them into your care. They now watch over their loved ones from above, knowing the love and tranquility that we all yearn for.
Beth and Carter enjoyed another heartwarming instance together. He’s unsure of his next steps, as there seems to be no work at hand. Beth plants a kiss on his cheek and suggests he catch up on rest. It appears that we have moved beyond the stage where Rip and Beth would question Carter’s status as their son again.
This season’s musical scoring deserves accolades for its exquisite composition and strategic placement that heightens emotional impact. It sends shivers down your spine and intensifies the emotional resonance of already poignant scenes.
As a gamer, I’ve just scored a major jackpot with the ranch bringing in 30 million dollars! This means another year, and potentially more if expenses decrease. It’s fantastic news! However, Beth insists that I vow to not splurge on anything related to this ranch. She wants me to learn from John’s mistakes; you can’t secure the future by overspending.
Towards the end of the episode, Kayce inquires about a business matter to his sister. Specifically, if he purchased a $300,000 car for just $1 and registered it, would he owe taxes on the amount he paid or the actual worth of the vehicle? Of course, one only pays taxes based on the sale price. Now, let’s consider Kayce’s clever suggestion.
Before Kayce, looking elated, was about to depart, Beth rushed towards the car unexpectedly. She hadn’t thought of this solution herself and was taken aback. He asked her for a day’s time. The strategy is to either donate or sell at a significantly reduced price, thus lowering the taxes substantially. The only means to preserve Yellowstone seems to be giving it away, but to whom remains the question.
Don’t miss out next week at 8/7c on Paramount Network, as I eagerly wait to find out how it all concludes in the grand finale of Yellowstone.
