Yellowstone fans furious about shock character death as season 5 returns
As a long-time fan of Yellowstone and someone who has invested countless hours into following the Dutton family saga, I must say I was left utterly stunned by the shocking turn of events that unfolded at the beginning of season 5 part 2. The sudden and mysterious death of John Dutton, played by the legendary Kevin Costner, was a gut-wrenching blow to fans who have grown accustomed to his indomitable spirit and unyielding resolve.
Yellowstone season 5 spoilers follow.
Supporters of the Western series “Yellowstone” were left astonished, even picking their jaws up from the ground, as the second half of season 5 began with a significant character’s demise.
Although fans anticipated less screen time for character John Dutton following Kevin Costner’s departure, the unfolding narrative took them by surprise as John was discovered deceased within the opening moments of the storyline.
In the ninth episode of Taylor Sheridan’s series titled ‘Desire Is All You Need’, it’s revealed that Governor of Montana, played by Costner, meets his end on the bathroom floor after receiving a fatal headshot. Interestingly, Kevin Costner himself did not film this scene, so a stand-in actor was used to portray the impactful moment instead.
In simpler terms, John’s son, Jamie (portrayed by Wes Bentley), who also serves as Montana’s Attorney General, discovered his father deceased and held a news conference to reveal that John, the head of the Dutton family, took his own life.
After the heartbreaking events unfolded, fans of “Yellowstone” found themselves frustrated by John’s unexpected departure, especially since showrunner Christina Voros suggested that Kevin Costner would play a crucial part in the series’ final chapter.
Is it possible for me to take legal action against the makers of ‘Yellowstone’ because they caused me long-term emotional distress within the first 30 seconds of an episode, as I expressed on Twitter?
The way John Dutton left the show was more fitting for a gladiator’s defeat rather than a victim’s plight. It really spoiled the entire series for me. I didn’t appreciate how #Yellowstone chose to conclude Costner’s character.
One angered fan totally disagreed with the twist, writing: “If THAT’S how they decide to end a great character like John Dutton…THAT’S BULLS**T.”
“The character John Dutton was remarkable, yet many people felt he deserved a more fitting farewell than what ‘Yellowstone’ provided, even considering the presence of Kevin Costner.
Though some viewers appear indifferent towards the show’s new direction, others remain engaged and appreciate the acting prowess displayed by the ensemble, particularly that of Kelly Reilly portraying John Dutton’s daughter, Beth Dutton.
As a devoted admirer, I understand why many feel reluctant to continue watching Yellowstone after the way John Dutton’s storyline ended. However, as someone who appreciates the nuances of character development, I firmly believe that Kelly Reilly’s exceptional performance in this season is worth witnessing.
It appears that Yellowstone might be concluding its run, although there have been whispers of a potential sixth season. However, an upcoming spin-off titled The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J Adams from Suits, and Beau Garrett from Firefly Lane, is set to debut next year instead.
Yellowstone resumed its fifth season on Sunday, November 10th in the United States and on the following day, Monday, November 11th, in the UK. You can catch it streaming on Paramount+.
