‘Yellowjackets’: What we know and what questions remain for Season 3

This story contains spoilers for the first two seasons of “Yellowjackets.”

The renowned soccer champions who are often seen on television return, this time venturing into the uncharted territory of wilderness survival – with a surprising twist: they’ve taken up cannibalism.

In just about two years, the third installment of “Yellowjackets” will debut on both Paramount+ and Showtime this coming Friday. This gripping series, conceived by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, has been captivating audiences since its inception, following a diverse group of teenagers (and one adult) who survived a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness back in 1996. The story also delves into their attempts to rebuild their lives after being rescued, as portrayed by their present-day selves.

Unfortunately for the survivors, their past continues to haunt — and hunt — them.

Television

The current best TV show, ‘Yellowjackets,’ combines elements reminiscent of both ‘Lord of the Flies’ and ‘Heathers,’ or it’s like the Spice Girls got trapped with the Donner Party.

Towards the close of Season 2, the adolescent survivors choose Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) as their new chief following a gruesome ritual where they sacrificed one of their number to appease the wilderness. In an act of desperation triggered by intense hunger, they consumed this sacrifice. As the season concludes, we see them hastily exiting the cabin that had served as their shelter, which was now ablaze. The fire might have been set by Coach Ben (Steven Krueger), who was caught stealing matches and later fled to another hidden refuge to avoid the escalating insanity and transformation of the teens into cannibals.

Currently, Natalie (Juliette Lewis) meets an unfortunate end at the hands of Misty (Christina Ricci), as the survivors try to revive their ancient custom of sacrificing to the wilderness. Not everyone was fully supportive of this practice. Simultaneously, Shauna (Melanie Lynskey), who had indeed committed a murder, seems to have escaped suspicion. As for Taissa (Tawny Cypress), her struggle with sleepwalking-induced dissociation still remains unresolved.

Who’s still alive?

The individuals who were on the 1996 plane crash that survived and have since reunited to handle its aftermath are Shauna Sadecki, formerly known as Shipman, Taissa Turner, Misty Quigley, Lottie Matthews (played by Simone Kessell), and Van Palmer (portrayed by Lauren Ambrose).

Among those who survived the 1996 plane crash were Coach Ben Scott, Travis Martinez (who later died in Season 1), Mari, Akilah, Melissa, and Gen. The whereabouts or fate of these individuals beyond Season 1 remains unknown.

Notable deaths

In a tragic turn of events, the once-troubled head of the Yellowjackets, who had been causing trouble, met an untimely end at the hands of Misty. This occurred during the present timeline as she was attempting to shield her latest acquaintance, Lisa, from harm.

In the current timeline, a detective and an old classmate of the Yellowjackets was fatally wounded by Walter Tattersall during their investigation into the demise of Adam Martin. This individual was once a colleague and acquaintance from Kevyn Tran’s past.

In the year 1996, Javi Martinez’s younger brother tragically perished after falling into a frozen lake in an attempt to shield Natalie from being pursued by her fellow team members.

Kristen, or Crystal as she’s known on the soccer team, was one of the survivors from the plane crash. Tragically, during a dramatic confrontation with Misty – who had admitted to disabling the plane’s transponder, effectively hindering their rescue efforts – Kristen met her untimely end by falling off a cliff.

Shauna gave birth to a baby boy in 1996, a child she was carrying for her current spouse, Jeff (who was then dating Jackie), but tragically, the newborn didn’t make it past delivery.

The performers have discovered that they’re yet to fully recover from the intense physical and emotional demands of the challenging second season. “It’s been incredibly intense,” remarks Sophie Nélisse, portraying young Shauna.

Adam Martin: The current lover of Shauna, who is accused of betrayal with Adam during their time stranded in the Canadian wilderness, ends up killing him when she suspects he’s threatening to expose their secret and incriminate her and her Yellowjacket teammates for their actions.

Jackie Taylor: As the leader of the soccer team and Shauna’s closest friend, Jackie tragically perished from cold exposure during sleep, following a dispute with her teammates. She was the initial victim consumed by the survivor group from the plane crash. From time to time, she reappears to Shauna in vivid dreams.

Travis Martinez is the older son of Coach Martinez and Natalie, who had an off-and-on relationship. He survived the 1996 plane crash. More recently, he was found dead in his barn by Misty and Natalie. Lottie claims she was there and suggests his death was an accident.

Jessica Roberts: In the present, Taissa hires a private investigator named Jessica Roberts, disguised as a journalist, to probe into her fellow plane crash survivor’s activities. Unfortunately, she is captured by Misty and later meets an untimely end at Misty’s hands.

Laura Lee: A devout member of the soccer team who miraculously survived the plane crash, but later perished when the aircraft she piloted as an attempt to secure aid disintegrated mid-flight. Occasionally, her teammates claim to have encounters with her in dreams or visions.

Some questions that remain for Season 3

One intriguing enigma in this series revolves around the nature of the wilderness: is it a supernatural being or dark force pursuing the surviving Yellowjackets, as some like Lottie currently speculate, or could it be something they imagined as an explanation for their actions during their 19-month survival? If the latter is accurate, everything unfolding in the present may merely represent a manifestation of their suppressed trauma. In any case, it appears that whatever “it” is, it intends to expand its tally of victims in Season 3.

Initially after the plane crash, how many people survived in total? The series primarily follows a group of core survivors who have reunited recently: Shauna, Misty, Natalie, Taissa, Van, and Lottie. However, the count of other survivors depicted in 1996 has varied throughout the show’s first two seasons. The exact number of survivors in the wilderness (and those who may have been sacrificed or consumed) still remains uncertain.

During the second season, Misty becomes acquainted with Walter Tattersall (Elijah Wood), another resident detective who often posts on the crime-solving message board she uses frequently. At first, Walter appears eager to unravel the mystery surrounding Adam’s disappearance and death; however, he eventually aids in sabotaging the official investigation by murdering and framing Kevyn Tran. Does Walter have feelings for Misty so strong that murder is merely an insignificant act, or does he harbor secret intentions?

In the initial episode of “Yellowjackets,” a young woman is pursued in the forest during winter, eventually falling into what appears to be a pit. As the story unfolds, it’s revealed that she was sacrificed and consumed as part of a cannibalistic rite, but her true identity remains undisclosed.
