Yellowjackets Season 3 Twist Leaves Juliette Lewis’ Natalie More Enigmatic Than Ever

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Yellowjackets season 3, episodes 1-10.

In the third season of “Yellowjackets,” events unfolding during its teenage timeframe create complexity that muddles the adult plotline, and the character of Juliette Lewis’ Natalie grows particularly puzzling following the show’s recent episode. Initially, the teen and adult narratives in “Yellowjackets” for the first two seasons ran parallel smoothly. However, as we delve deeper into the Wilderness timeline introduced in season 3, the connections between the adult characters and their relationships grow increasingly unclear. This enigma is most evident with Natalie, whose ties to the other survivors begin to fray during the teen timeline of season 3.

As the fortunate survivor chosen by the Wilderness in the finale of Yellowjackets season 2, I find myself thrust into a leadership role among my fellow girls in our seemingly paradisaical new settlement. Yet, it doesn’t take much time for petty disputes to flare up within our group. By the time we reach the climactic moments of season 3, two distinct factions have emerged among us teenage survivors: one faction yearns to return home, while another is determined to stay in the Wilderness. Caught between these opposing ideologies, I ultimately side with those who wish for rescue and embark on a quest to find help at the end of Yellowjackets season 3. My actions make me a hero, but they also stir up uncertainties about my future self.

Why Would Natalie Ever Reconnect With Shauna After What Happened In The Wilderness?

She Should Be As Angry With Shauna As She Is With Misty

In Yellowjackets season 3, it falls upon Natalie and Shauna to assume leadership roles for the two distinct groups. This situation often places them in direct conflict throughout much of the storyline. Natalie embodies the group’s humanity because she remains connected to her own character, while Shauna personifies their primal instincts, including the aggression and wrath that the wilderness encourages. It’s clear that Shauna isn’t content with Natalie as a leader, and conversely, Natalie disapproves of many of Shauna’s decisions when she seizes control.

In the 10th episode of season 3 in “Yellowjackets”, Natalie disregards Shauna’s desires by exploiting a recent hunt for rescue purposes. This action enrages Shauna when she learns that Natalie and Hannah had exchanged positions. Given Shauna’s history, it’s reasonable to expect her to respond aggressively before help arrives. Regardless of how she responds, the strain between them is significant enough to imply they won’t be friends in the future timeline.

In Yellowjackets season 1, it becomes even more puzzling when they easily rekindle their relationships. During the adult storyline, Natalie criticizes Misty severely because Misty damaged the plane’s black box and prolonged their stay in the wilderness. Given this, one would expect Natalie to treat Shauna just as harshly due to similar circumstances, but surprisingly, she does not.

Tai & Natalie Getting So Close After Yellowjackets’ Past Timeline Makes No Sense

Tai Doesn’t Want To Go Home In Season 3 Either

As a devoted fan, I’d put it this way: While Tai might not be as relentless as Shauna in the teen timeline, she’s one of the Yellowjackets choosing to stay behind in season 3, which creates tension with Natalie too – something that’s hard to tell from their adult friendship. However, their adult interactions show Tai footing the bill for Natalie’s rehab and acknowledging her as a savior. Yet, her decisions in season 3 hint at a simmering resentment towards Natalie, not just gratitude.

It’s plausible that the Other Tai is the one who prefers living in the Wilderness, contrasting with the regular Tai who seems grateful to be home. This difference could be why Natalie finds herself drawn to Tai in the adult storyline of Yellowjackets. Yet, it remains unclear what would motivate Natalie to associate with her. Given that Natalie is blunt and doesn’t typically engage with people she doesn’t admire or care for, it’s unexpected that she is so eager to rebuild her friendships with Shauna and Tai.

Natalie & Travis’ Adult Romance Is More Difficult To Understand After Yellowjackets Season 3

They Barely Interact After Breakng Up In The Teen Timeline

In Yellowjackets, we don’t witness much interaction between Natalie and Travis post-rescue regarding their relationship, but insights are provided through Natalie herself. She expresses profound sorrow over Travis’ demise and shares that they had made a vow to each other – neither would resort to suicide due to their Wilderness ordeal. It seems evident that the 19 months spent in the wilderness deeply traumatized both, fostering a lasting connection upon their return home. However, their interactions are sparse in Yellowjackets season 3, making their ongoing bond puzzling.

It’s plausible that the dynamic between Natalie and Travis might deepen in ‘Yellowjackets’ season 4, but for now, it’s surprising how much they still feel for each other after all these years. Despite having a romantic connection at the start of the series, the death of Javi creates a chasm between them that the show doesn’t fully explore, making their adult relationship hard to accept.
