Yellowjackets Season 3: 9 Mysteries to Unravel
After a long wait, “Yellowjackets” is coming back for its third season! You’ll get to rejoin your favorite group of high school soccer players who are mentally unraveling and entangled in mystery, chaos, and possibly murder. The initial two episodes of Season 3 can be streamed on Paramount+ starting February 14 for Showtime plan subscribers, before they air on the Showtime network at 8 p.m. ET on February 16. This means viewers will get a double helping of the gripping dual-timeline survival drama!
Given that creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson have indicated they aim for the series to span five seasons, it’s unlikely that the next ten episodes will provide definitive answers to all our questions about the teen Yellowjackets’ wilderness survival and its long-term impact on their adult lives. However, we might be able to uncover some of the mysteries introduced in the first two seasons during this time.
Here are nine questions we still have going into Yellowjackets Season 3.
Is Natalie the Antler Queen from the pilot?
Following the incident where teenager Nat (Sophie Thatcher) was saved from becoming the team’s prey due to Javi (Luciano Leroux) falling through the ice and drowning, Lottie (Courtney Eaton) asserted that some unseen forces in the woods had selected Nat to guide their destiny. “The wilderness decided who we would feed on,” she explained to the group. “It has already chosen who should lead us.
However, is it accurate to say that Nat is the Antler Queen from the “pit girl” scene in the pilot? Considering that the wilderness seems to fluctuate between hot and cold temperatures, it’s questionable if one girl could maintain the title of queen for an extended period. Moreover, Lottie was the initial one to assume the role, suggesting that Yellowjackets might not be a series that reveals its secrets so readily.
What happens to Coach Ben?
In the Season 2 finale, Coach Ben (Steven Krueger) was determined to escape the clutches of teenage cannibalism by living independently in the wilderness. After discovering Javi’s old hideout and unsuccessfully persuading Natalie to join him, Ben revisited the cabin one last time to gather matches for a fire at his new residence. However, he saw Natalie being appointed as the new group leader, which may have prompted him to torch the cabin. Although we haven’t seen Ben in the current timeline, it remains unknown how his story unfolds in the wilderness or what resources the hideout holds. But given the girls’ reaction towards potential destruction of their only shelter, Ben might find himself as the next meal if he’s not cautious enough.
How are the Yellowjackets going to survive without a cabin?
The cabin was engulfed in flames during a severe winter, further endangering the Yellowjackets. A snippet from Season 3 depicts Van (played by Liv Hewson) and Shauna (portrayed by Sophie NĂ©lisse) expressing contrasting opinions about their experiences thus far in the wilderness. This scene reveals that they manage to reach spring, and it is generally thought among the Yellowjackets that their survival was due to Nat’s guidance and the willingness to make “sacrifices,” which apparently led to the unusual occurrence of warm weather.
…how they endure another harsh winter filled with cold spells, snowstorms, and the aftermath of events that seem to be a mix of extreme psychological distress or mysterious supernatural powers, remains uncertain.
What are we going to do without Juliette Lewis?
In the Season 2 finale, eliminating adult Natalie certainly brought an unexpected turn. Now, the show faces the challenging task of progressing without the captivating influence of Juliette Lewis, whose character was known for stealing scenes. The teenage Nat’s narrative will carry on in the past timeline as we uncover her journey post-Antler Queen coronation. However, with the departure of one of our main cast members, it seems plausible that a fresh survivor might emerge to join us in the present day.
Who is Hilary Swank playing?
In September, it was disclosed that Hilary Swank would be part of the cast for Yellowjackets during Season 3, appearing as a recurring guest star. As of now, specifics about her character remain undisclosed. However, if she’s portraying an adult version of one of the teen characters, it seems likely that they will delve deeper into the backstory of a character who hasn’t been spotlighted much so far.
How is Misty going to cope with even more trauma?
It appears that Natalie isn’t just another casual victim for Misty, but rather someone whose death seems destined to haunt her deeply. Unlike with others such as Shauna and Taissa, it seems that Misty had an unusually intense attachment towards Natalie, which was more than mere obsession.
Ricci explained to Variety that Misty’s actions of accidentally stabbing Nat with the phenobarbital syringe were unintentional. “In a moment of impulse, Misty made another characteristically rash, self-centered choice,” he said. “She was trying to protect her friend from harm, but her decision turned out to be disastrous.
What’s the deal with the Man with No Eyes?
During the first two seasons, the enigmatic figure known as the Man with No Eyes has made appearances in both wilderness and contemporary settings. Although we’ve learned that he initially appeared to young Taissa (portrayed by Bailey Burr as a child and Jasmin Savoy Brown as a teenager) when her grandmother had a vision of him on her deathbed, and seems connected to Taissa’s sleepwalking episodes, the nature of this character remains a mystery. Is he truly a supernatural entity or merely a manifestation of Taissa’s past traumas? Lyle suggests that the Man with No Eyes could be an embodiment of death itself.
In a 2023 PaleyFest panel, it was stated about Taissa’s character that she is not connected with her spiritual side nor her ability to believe or have faith. This symbolic character could be seen as the embodiment of death. The character likely stands for ‘the unknowable’, a concept that makes Taissa’s character uncomfortable due to her fear of the unknown.
How were the Yellowjackets rescued?
It’s established that Yellowjackets who manage to return home have spent a total of approximately 19 months in the wilderness, but the details on how they eventually left the forest remain unknown. The question arises whether there is still an active search and rescue team looking for them after such a long time, or if some of the girls somehow managed to break free from their predicament and make it back to civilization on their own. As Season 3 unfolds, we can only hope that more clues about the end of their journey will be revealed.
Who’s the pit girl?
In the initial episode of the series, the identity of the girl pursued and consumed by the Antler Queen and her masked allies remains a mystery, leaving viewers eagerly speculating about it. Although we now know Misty is part of the Antler Queen’s inner circle, she can be ruled out as the victim. Similarly, we cannot assume that one of the five surviving teens—Shauna, Taissa, Nat, Lottie, or Van—is the girl in question. If the character has not played a substantial role in the past timeline, the revelation might not pack the desired punch. At this point, our strongest hypothesis is Mari (Alexa Barajas), given her significant presence within the group and physical resemblance to the girl seen fleeing for her life.
