XG beats Team Spirit out of The International 2024

XG beats Team Spirit out of The International 2024

As a long-time Dota 2 fan with a decade of roots in the esports scene, I must say that this year’s TI has been filled with unexpected twists and turns. The journey of Xtreme Gaming, hailing from China, is particularly captivating. After eight years since Wings claimed the Aegis of Champions, it seemed like the Chinese fans were doomed to witness another disappointing TI run. However, XG has proven us wrong, reverse-sweeping Team Spirit in a nail-biting series that left me on the edge of my seat.

Instead of Team Spirit, who twice claimed the Aegis of Champions, it’s now up to Xtreme Gaming to keep the hopes alive for Chinese spectators.

It’s been eight years since Wings took home the Aegis of Champions, and no Chinese team has won The International since then. This year, with G2.iG and Team Zero out of contention, it seemed like another disappointing year for a Chinese team to win. But XG stepped up to the challenge, managing a reverse sweep against Team Spirit to keep their TI 13 dreams alive.

Although the series resulted in a 2-1 score, Xtreme Gaming maintained control throughout the three matches. Despite dropping the initial game, they held an edge to build upon, but unfortunately, they couldn’t seal the victory. The subsequent games were decisive wins for XG. This outcome shouldn’t come as a shock, given that their performance during the year was slightly more stable than TS.

According to XinQ after the post-game discussion, it appears that this year hasn’t been Team Spirit’s strongest season. He referred to their performance as being less than optimal.

But it wasn’t only a performance issue. Team Spirit also let them play in their comfort zone, allowing Xm’s sniper for two games, a hero they also used to beat Gaimin Gladiators.

Game 1: Team Spirit’s scary comeback to jeopardize XG’s The International 2024 run

Throughout the initial stages of the match, the Chinese team held a clear advantage. Regular assaults by Xtreme Gaming created an opportunity for them to seize the first Roshan. Moreover, they secured two decisive kills which significantly tilted the game in their favor, leaving Team Spirit with a daunting challenge.

Regrettably, during Team Spirit’s TI 13 run in the lower bracket, XG committed two errors. Initially, Muerta from XG perished outside their base without a chance to respawn. Subsequently, they were forced to forfeit Doom’s respawn opportunity to engage in a crucial high ground battle. In spite of these attempts, they managed to secure only two kills and ended up losing both sets of barracks.

Following a fierce comeback attempt by Xtreme Gaming, Team Spirit ultimately secured the win. With the elimination of three heroes who hadn’t purchased respawns, the Dragon Knight found the final moments effortless.

Game 2: Night and day for Xtreme Gaming

In the second game, managing net worth was a significant challenge for Team Spirit. The map saw few kills overall, but Visage’s unique abilities and Tinker in position 5 provided them with an unfair advantage. Moreover, Luna excels at farming resources compared to Morphling, leading Team Spirit into a tight battle near their tower. Unfortunately, they never fully recovered from that disadvantageous encounter.

Despite a seemingly insurmountable defense from the high ground by Team Spirit, XG utilized every last buyback at The International 2024, miraculously forcing a tie in the series and keeping their tournament life intact.

Game 3: The last stomp that XG needed to take Team Spirit out of TI 13

Once again, Spirit was granted the opportunity to choose Terrorblade as their signature hero, yet this selection proved ineffective throughout the game. The match, though low on kills, saw XG consistently compelling team fights. Unfortunately for Illya “Yatoro” Mulyarchuk, each such encounter resulted in severe penalties.

In this match, it boiled down to a strategy of picking off individual players rather than full-on team clashes. Ame’s Medusa amassed an impressive collection of items that Team Spirit struggled to counter. By the game’s end, no one dared to approach the Chinese hard carry for a fight.
