XDefiant Due to Shut Down in June 2025 as Ubisoft Closes Several Studios

As a dedicated gamer with countless hours invested into XDefiant, it feels like a punch to the gut hearing about its impending closure next year. I remember the excitement when it first launched and the thrill of every match played since then. It’s been an incredible ride, and I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I read the announcement.

Ubisoft has disclosed that they are closing down XDefiant in June 2025. The winding-down process for this free-to-play multiplayer first-person shooter is currently ongoing. As planned, Season 3 will be launched, but it’s important to note that Ubisoft initially denied rumors suggesting an earlier shutdown of the game.

Due to a recent announcement on Twitter/X, it’s important to note that from now on, you won’t be able to download the game, register new players, or make purchases. However, Season 3 is still scheduled to launch. The servers will stay active and the game can be played until June 3rd, 2025. Ubisoft has also promised a full refund for those who bought the Ultimate Founders Pack.

Players who bought items in the game over the past month can expect a complete refund. At the same time, Ubisoft has informed GameSpot that half of the XDefiant team will move to different roles within the company, and both their San Francisco and Osaka studios will be shut down. Additionally, their Sydney production site is scaling back its operations.

As a result of this choice, we will be shutting down our production studios in San Francisco and Osaka, as well as reducing operations at our Sydney site. This means that approximately 143 employees in San Francisco, 134 employees in Osaka, and more staff in Sydney are expected to leave the company.” (Ubisoft announced this.)

The shutdown of XDefiant, which amassed over 15 million players, has been announced. Initially, Seasons 3 and 4 were planned for 2025, but now it appears only Season 3 will materialize. In a statement from Executive Producer Mark Rubin, he acknowledged that entering the free-to-play market with an ‘old-school’ arcade shooter was a “risky move.

XDefiant will be closing down on 3rd June 2025.
