Xbox Handheld Console Would Combine the ‘Best of Xbox and Windows’, says Microsoft

For quite some time now, suggestions about an Xbox handheld console from head honcho Phil Spencer have been circulating. Lately, there’s been another wave of chatter about a portable Xbox device, fueled by Microsoft’s VP of ‘Next Generation’, Jason Ronald, subtly hinting at the possibility of such a product.

During a discussion titled ‘The Future of Handheld Gaming’, Ronald stated, “For a considerable time, we’ve been consistently innovating in the console gaming market. Our collaborations across the industry are focused on transferring the advancements and technologies we’ve nurtured in the console realm to PC and handheld gaming platforms.” (Source: The Verge)

In Ronald’s words, “We’re merging the top-tier features of Xbox and Windows, as we’ve developed an exceptional operating system over the past 20 years. However, it has primarily been tied to the console. Our aim is to concentrate on how we can extend these experiences for both players and developers across the wider Windows platform.

Although a standalone, handheld Xbox device may not be available for some time, there seem to be advancements in enhancing the rather unsatisfactory Windows interface on current handheld devices. As mentioned by Ronald, Microsoft is considering streamlining the user experience to make it “significantly more like a console experience”.

Ronald went on to say that there’s a lot more to come from us by the end of this year. He believes it will be an exciting journey, and as we progress, you’ll notice even more investments being made. However, for now, there’s a lot more we’ll reveal later this year.

It is yet unclear if we will indeed receive updates about an Xbox portable gaming device, but it appears more and more probable that Microsoft might be planning something secret. In other words, one could speculate that they have a surprise in store, or perhaps hidden within their pockets.
