Xbox Friend Requests Are Coming Back After More Than a Decade

Xbox Friend Requests Are Coming Back After More Than a Decade

As an old-school gamer who remembers the days when friend requests were as common as a high score on the leaderboard, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia with Microsoft’s recent announcement. The return of friend requests to Xbox after a long hiatus feels like reconnecting with a forgotten friend from the past.

For the first time since the debut of Xbox One in 2013, Microsoft has revealed a comeback of friend request functionality. Initially available to ‘Alpha Skip-Ahead’ Xbox Insiders on both consoles and PCs through the PC Gaming preview, this feature aims to offer an enhanced experience for managing friends and followers.

This change means that friendships are now mutual, requiring both parties to accept an invitation, providing you with greater control and versatility over your connections. In contrast, following someone continues to function as a one-way connection, allowing you to keep up-to-date with their shared content from other players, clubs, or games. As stated in the announcement on Xbox Wire.

In the upcoming modifications, your existing friends and followers will be kept up-to-date automatically. This means you’ll continue to be connected with those who have added you as a friend, while your follower list remains unchanged. You can access this information through your console using the Xbox guide button, followed by selecting the ‘People’ tab for navigation. Additionally, you have the option to customize your privacy settings, which allows you to control who can send friendship requests or follow your account.

The updated ‘make new friends’ feature is being introduced to Xbox Insiders, which includes sending friend requests again. This feature will eventually become accessible to all Xbox users.
