Xbox CEO Phil Spencer Steps Down As Microsoft Confirms Replacement

Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft Gaming and a longtime leader of the Xbox team, is leaving the company. He’s been with Xbox since 2001 and became CEO in 2022, guiding the division through significant purchases and a shift toward prioritizing games and software over consoles.

Phil Spencer is retiring from Microsoft, according to Variety. Asha Sharma, currently president of Microsoft CoreAI product development, will be taking over his role. Sarah Bond, the current president of Xbox, is also leaving the company. Matt Booty, who leads Xbox Game Studios, will become Microsoft’s Chief Content Officer.

According to a report from Variety, Spencer announced to Xbox employees that he’s moving on, highlighting an “exciting new chapter for Microsoft Gaming” with Asha Sharma becoming the new CEO. He commended her dedication to understanding both players and developers, and explained he will stay on as an advisor for a few months this summer.

Sharma expressed humility and a sense of urgency as she joins the team and its exceptional work environment, especially during this time of rapid change in the gaming industry. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella added that Asha has a strong track record of driving growth throughout her career at companies like Microsoft, Instacart, and Meta.
