X-Men star Alan Cumming claims it’s ‘scary’ to live in Trump’s America and reveals why he had to return to his native Scotland

Alan Cumming, known for his role in X-Men, says he’s found it frightening to live in the United States under Donald Trump’s presidency, which led him to move back to his home country of Scotland.

Alan Cumming, the host of The Traitors US, says many well-known Americans are afraid to publicly criticize Donald Trump. Cumming, 60, now lives primarily in Scotland, having spent less time in New York recently.

Alan explained he chose to come to Scotland because he wanted to live somewhere with a strong sense of community and people who care for one another.

The actor explained that politics played a role in their decision. They wanted to live in a place where their personal beliefs matched those of the government and the citizens.

‘It’s comforting to be in a place where you know people are looking out for each other.’

He added of the US: ‘It’s scary to live there right now, especially being well known and outspoken.

‘I realised so few people do that any more because they’re scared.’

Alan announced he’ll be returning to Britain in January 2025, ending his over 25-year life in America. He’s part of a growing group of celebrities leaving the US due to their opposition to the MAGA movement.

The award-winning actor moved to New York in 1998 after starring in Cabaret on Broadway.

Oh my gosh, after that, he absolutely killed it in America! Seriously, two Golden Globe nominations and three Emmys just for being the lead in ‘The Good Wife’? It was amazing to watch him shine, honestly. I was glued to the screen every single episode, and those nominations were SO deserved!

In 2008 he even became an American citizen.

I was really struck by something Alan shared recently. He’s always talked about wanting to return home, and he finally admitted that it’s because he feels a real disconnect with American values. He wants to spend his final days back in his home country, surrounded by a culture he truly connects with.

Alan, the host of the US version of The Traitors, shared that he and his husband, Grant, are hoping to spend more time in both their current location and New York now that they have a vacation home there.

‘I’ve definitely been planning to do that just as a thing in my life, but also my work.

I’m currently filming The Traitors, which means I spend about a month here each year. I also filmed two movies here last year, so it feels like I’m meant to keep returning.

Alan shared on Kaye Adams’ podcast, How to be 60, that he was looking for a community of people who shared his worldview.

The actor, best known for playing Boris Grishenko in the James Bond movie GoldenEye, shared that he feels a strong pull to reconnect with others. He enjoys being around people who share his beliefs and values, and finds it very fulfilling.

‘That gets really important as you get older.

I lived in New York for many years and truly loved it, but lately, with everything happening politically in the US, I’ve realized I don’t share the same values as many people there.

It’s wonderful when you visit, because it reminds even those with very conservative views that it’s important to help people in need and show kindness.

Here in America, it’s become obvious that the idea of the ‘American Dream’ isn’t about collective success – it’s really a ‘everyone for themselves’ situation. Being here has made me appreciate different values even more.

Grant arrived and, after a few months, remarked how relieved he was that nobody nearby was carrying a gun.

In 2024, Alan was appointed the new artistic director of Pitlochry Festival Theatre in Scotland, signaling his long-term commitment to the country. Despite having homes in New York and Inverness, he expressed his desire to build his future in Scotland.

He shared on How to be 60 that he envisions spending his final years in a house in the Scottish Highlands, either peacefully reading and cooking, or eventually passing away there.

‘I want to keep doing exciting things and be more based here.’
