X-Men Join the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday

I was thrilled beyond words as Marvel unveiled that the X-Men are now an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring in “Avengers: Doomsday” set to release on May 6, 2026. During a captivating five-hour livestream, we fans held our breaths, anxiously waiting as the camera gradually moved over a row of chairs bearing actors’ names.

It’s no surprise that certain plot twists aren’t really surprises if you’ve followed the recent Marvel cinematic journey. After all, Sebastian Stan’s character Bucky Barnes, whom he’s portrayed for 14 years in these movies, is undoubtedly coming back. It was only a matter of time before Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi made an appearance in the next Avengers film.

Introducing Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as the Fantastic Four this summer seems more like setting the stage for their significant roles in future team-up films rather than a mere cameo. And even the most casual Marvel enthusiasts might have predicted that Robert Downey Jr., who has been part of this universe for so long, would return to the MCU. However, not as Iron Man this time, but as the antagonist Doctor Doom—an alternate version of Tony Stark who has taken a turn towards villainy.

Initially, some names caught me off guard, among them Kelsey Grammer, known for his portrayal of Beast in the early 2000s X-Men films produced by 20th Century Fox (now owned by Disney and Marvel Studios). It was no surprise then that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, iconic as Professor X and Magneto respectively, joined the lineup, along with Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, all prominent figures in the franchise. Even Channing Tatum, who portrayed Gambit in last year’s Deadpool and Wolverine, showed up. Thus, it seems that the original X-Men will make their appearance in an upcoming Avengers movie.

The upcoming film titled “Avengers: Doomsday” signals the comeback of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the return of directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who were instrumental in creating “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”. With Marvel Studios experiencing a dip in box-office performance lately, they are counting on the successful collaboration between the Russo brothers and Downey Jr. to attract moviegoers back to cinemas. The inclusion of legendary X-Men characters only adds to the appeal, and let’s not forget that these movies often hold a few unexpected twists in store.

Significantly absent from the cast reveal were some crucial members of the Avengers squad, such as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. Similarly, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), who have been successful in their respective films, were not included in the cast list for this movie. However, it is possible that any of these characters may yet appear in the film or the next Avengers installment, Avengers: Secret Wars, as Marvel often incorporates surprising plot twists.

The Russos have kept quiet about the stories for both Doomsday and Secret Wars. However, Marvel Studios has been subtly hinting at a multiverse concept across their TV shows and movies. For instance, Spider-Men from different realities teamed up in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Loki traverses various universes in his series, Deadpool explored multiple realms to find a Wolverine ally in Deadpool and Wolverine, Doctor Strange fought off alternate versions of himself in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Professor X, played by Stewart, appeared as a character from another universe who was ultimately killed by Scarlet Witch. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a demise of Professor X on screen; a version of him also perished in Logan.

As a fervent fan, I can’t help but be intrigued by the tantalizing suggestion that Multiverse of Madness offers: the convergence of parallel realities could set the stage for a breathtaking clash among their inhabitants. The comic book lore hints at an epic showdown between superheroes, with Doctor Doom orchestrating the turmoil. Will we bear witness to a thrilling confrontation between the X-Men and the Avengers? The location of the Fantastic Four in this cosmic battle remains uncertain. It’s an exciting prospect for resolving a complex narrative dilemma that has long puzzled us. Integrating the X-Men into the Avengers cinematic universe has been a challenging endeavor. After all, if the X-Men coexisted with the Avengers in the same universe, where were they during Loki’s attack on Earth? Or when Ultron or Thanos threatened our planet? They were hidden away in another dimension!

However, the hypothesis of a multiverse adds an intriguing twist to this casting announcement. Simply seeing a familiar face on the seating chart doesn’t automatically imply that actor is reprising their old role. After all, Robert Downey Jr. is portraying Doom rather than Iron Man, and it’s plausible that Ian McKellen could be an alternate reality Hulk. In essence, anything can happen! Here’s who we speculate will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, based on their past films.

Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth, who has portrayed Thor for some time, remains as the sole active and non-retired member of the initial Avengers squad. Excited fans are now anticipating how he will respond upon encountering a Doctor Doom that bears a striking resemblance to his old friend Tony Stark.

Vanessa Kirby

Vanessa Kirby will first appear in the MCU as Sue Storm, also known as Invisible Woman, this summer in “Fantastic Four”. This film about Marvel’s original family takes place in a separate universe from the one where our familiar Avengers exist. The introduction of Sue and the rest of the Fantastic Four indicates that there may be a merging or clash of these worlds.

Anthony Mackie

In the recently released movie “Captain America: Brave New World” this spring, the latest Captain America was introduced. This happened as Chris Evans’ character, Steve Rogers, passed the shield to him at the conclusion of “Avengers: Endgame”.

Sebastian Stan

Sebastian Stan, known as Bucky Barnes (also called the Winter Soldier), has portrayed Steve’s closest friend for more than ten years in various Marvel movies. Recently, he made a brief appearance in ‘Brave New World’, where his character declared his intention to run for political office. This summer, the politician-turned-character will be seen in ‘Thunderbolts’, a film focusing on an unusual team of anti-heroes who might take over the role previously held by the Avengers.

Letitia Wright

In the movie “Wakanda Forever”, the character Shuri, portrayed by Letitia Wright, assumes the role of Black Panther from her brother T’Challa (previously played by Chadwick Boseman who is no longer with us).

Paul Rudd

Previously, Paul Rudd has portrayed the role of a superhero known for shrinking to microscopic dimensions in three Ant-Man films.

Wyatt Russell

In the Disney+ series, “Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” Wyatt Russell made his first appearance as the character U.S. Agent. Previously given the supersoldier serum but found unfit to wield Captain America’s shield, this individual now serves as a kind of assassin. This summer, you can catch him in “Thunderbolts.”*

Tenoch Huerta Mejia

In the movie “Wakanda Forever”, Mejia made his debut as the antagonist, Namor. He was the one who took the life of Queen Romanda, portrayed by Angela Bassett, within that film. By the end of the movie, Shuri reached a tentative agreement with Namor. However, it’s worth noting that in the comic books, Namor has frequently allied with Doctor Doom, which might pose a threat in this upcoming film.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach

One character from the Fantastic Four group is Moss-Bachrach, who portrays The Thing, an incredibly sturdy creature resembling a giant stone and boasting unparalleled strength within the team.

Simu Liu

Liu is set to reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the release of his movie “Shang-Chi” in 2021, where we last saw him embarking on a journey alongside some mystic practitioners.

Florence Pugh

In the film ‘Black Widow’, Yelena Belova, skillfully portrayed by Pugh, first appeared as the younger sibling of Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). Similar to her sister, Yelena is a proficient assassin. After the passing of her sister, Yelena takes on contracts as a mercenary in the upcoming movie ‘Thunderbolts’.

Kelsey Grammer

Our initial clue that the original X-Men cast from the 2000 film might reappear on the big screen was the mention of Grammer’s name. Recently, Grammer appeared as a cameo in the post-credits scene for The Marvels. Now, it looks like he’ll be accompanied by other X-Men characters.

Lewis Pullman

Pullman is playing a new superhero named The Sentry in this summer’s Thunderbolts*.

Danny Ramirez

In the latest Captain America film, Sam Wilson’s partner adopts Sam’s former alias, “The Falcon.

Joseph Quinn

This summer, Quinn is set to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Firebrand version of the Human Torch in Fantastic Four. However, it’s important to note that he should not be mistaken for Chris Evans’ portrayal of the Human Torch, who initially appeared in the 2005 Fantastic Four movie and had a notable appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine more recently.

David Harbour

Natasha and Yelena’s adoptive dad is known as the Red Guardian, a character who serves as an equivalent to Captain America from the U.S.S.R. He featured in the movie “Black Widow” and is set to appear in “Thunderbolts.”*

Winston Duke

In the Black Panther movies, M’Baku from Duke played a significant part. By the end of ‘Wakanda Forever’, M’Baku ascends to the throne in Wakanda, allowing Shuri to delve deeper into her scientific research and heroic endeavors.

Hannah John-Kamen

Originally introduced in “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” the character played by John-Kamen, who was initially a villain but later became a hero known as Ghost, is set to make an appearance in “Thunderbolts” as well.

*Note: Thunderbolts is a fictional team of superheroes appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Tom Hiddleston

I’ve seen quite a few changes throughout my time as Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At times, I’ve been a menacing villain plotting to rule Earth, and at others, I’ve stepped up as a hero determined to prevent Thanos from annihilating half of all life across the cosmos. There have been instances where I’ve met my end only to be brought back to life, and various iterations of me populate the Loki TV series set in different realities. My presence in this upcoming film is said to bring about a reunion with my brother, Thor.

Patrick Stewart

Enthusiasts couldn’t contain their excitement upon hearing that the original version of Professor X would resume his leadership role for the X-Men, guiding them through whatever confrontations they might encounter in this Marvel film. Given that various iterations of Professor X have met their end in both “Logan” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” it remains a mystery which Professor X character will appear on screen in this upcoming production.

Ian McKellen

In this movie, Professor X’s complex ally, Magneto (portrayed brilliantly by McKellen), could take on the roles of both hero and antagonist. This depends on whether Magneto perceives Doctor Doom as a danger to mutants or a possible ally.

Alan Cumming

Currently excelling as the host of The Traitors, Cumming was once known for portraying the powerful mutant Nightcrawler in the initial X-Men movies. Notably, he was part of a memorable White House fight sequence in X2.

Rebecca Romijn

Prior to Jennifer Lawrence’s portrayal, Mystique – the character who can change shapes – was first played by Rebecca Romijn in cinematic adaptations.

James Marsden

Marsden’s performance as Cyclops, the Mutant characterized by exceptional vision and a longstanding affection for the powerful Jean Grey, might be what people remember him most for.

Channing Tatum

For quite some time, Tatum strived to create a movie centered around Gambit, the mutant who uses cards from New Orleans, but that film never materialized. However, in the past year, he had the opportunity to portray a rendition of the character (with an accent he was aware might be confusing) in Deadpool and Wolverine.

Pedro Pascal

It’s worth mentioning that Pascal is second to last on this list of actors. This summer, he will portray Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, in Fantastic Four. Throughout comic book lore, Reed Richards and Doctor Doom have frequently clashed. They are two of the most intelligent beings in the universe, once close friends who later became bitter adversaries. It’s possible that if a new leader arises for this Avengers team to challenge Doctor Doom, it could be Reed.

Robert Downey Jr.

Previously made known, Robert Downey Jr. is set to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking on the role of the supreme adversary, Doctor Doom. It’s anticipated that he will serve as the primary antagonist in both “Doomsday” (a fitting title given his character) and “Secret Wars”, where he aims for dominance, causing a clash among various heroes.
