Director Jake Schreier, who is making the new X-Men movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recently explained how it will be different from the previous X-Men films made by 20th Century Fox. He emphasized the need to tell fresh, new stories with the famous mutant superhero team. Schreier previously directed Thunderbolts, which came out in May 2025.
Jake Schreier wants MCU’s X-Men reboot to ‘feel new’
In a recent interview, Jake Schreier shared his ambition to create something entirely new and unique with the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of the X-Men.
The director recently talked to Screenrant about the upcoming season of Beef and also touched on the Marvel movie he’s working on. When asked about how he and the team chose the actors and brought their ideas to life, he didn’t share specifics. However, he did say that working on the Marvel film felt like both a big challenge and a fantastic chance.
The director of Paper Towns explained that he and Marvel Studios were exploring ways to make the new film feel fresh for audiences. They were also discussing story ideas that would build upon the previous movies from 20th Century Fox.
He explained that the show has been incredibly successful and achieved a lot, and now they’re thinking about where to take the story next. They want to explore new and exciting areas of the established story and create a fresh experience for viewers, taking them to places they haven’t seen before.
Director Justin Schreier began working on the new X-Men film in August 2025, a project penned by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo. He told Empire Magazine the experience has been “very, very exciting.” Schreier plans to apply what he learned while directing Thunderbolts to this movie, specifically finding the right balance between action and character development. He noted that even with a longer shooting schedule than usual, action sequences tend to take up a lot of time.
He explained that by the end of the process, they finally felt like they were starting to understand how things should be done. He described these moments as truly unique and valuable.
