X-Men ‘97 Star Stunned by Dark Season 2: ‘A Lot of People Die’

Even as far back as the 1990s, X-Men: The Animated Series didn’t hesitate to place its incredible mutant characters in difficult and often dark circumstances, a trend that continued in Disney+’s recent revival of the show. Now, according to one of the actors in the new animated Marvel series, we can expect things to get even more intense – and the serious tone isn’t likely to change.

At FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention, appeared with Cooper Andrews for a discussion about their work on AMC’s popular post-apocalyptic show. During the panel, the moderator, Maggie Lovitt from Collider, unexpectedly asked Marquand about what fans could anticipate in Season 2 of X-Men ’97.

The actor says that Season 2 of X-Men ’97 will be quite intense and very dark. He was even surprised that Disney approved the storyline, which he says will involve a lot of people dying. Other cast members of X-Men ’97 have shared hints about what’s coming in the next season, which began streaming on Disney+ in Spring 2024. However, Marquand is the first to confirm that Season 2 will feature character deaths.

What To Expect From X-Men ’97’s Season 2

Besides offering some discouraging previews of the upcoming season for Best Animated Series, Marquand also revealed he’s returning to voice . He’s basing his portrayal on how the character – played by Oscar Isaac – appeared in the poorly received 2016 live-action film, X-Men: Apocalypse, as some fans might point out. In past interviews, he’s also stated that this season will explore the origins of En Sabah Nur, the true name of the ancient being, who is among the first mutants on Earth and possesses abilities like immortality, control over his own atoms, telekinesis, and many others.

X-Men ’97 executive producer and Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum hinted at the possibility of a team with the letter ‘X’ in its name. This suggests the show might feature groups like X-Force or X-Statix, or other mutant teams following the same naming pattern. Recently, it was revealed that Neve Campbell, famous for her role as Sidney Prescott in the Scream films, is joining the Marvel universe through this series. She will be playing a powerful mutant, an Alpha-mutant, who, like her father Magneto, can control magnetic fields.

Although the wait for a new season has been longer than fans wanted, they can be glad to hear that a third season has already been commissioned. We don’t know exactly when it will be released on Disney+, but hopefully the time between Seasons 2 and 3 will be much shorter than the wait between the first and second seasons.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 is set to become available to stream on Disney+ sometime in 2026.
