X-Men '97 season 2 will be "darker", says Marvel star

As a gamer who’s been through the Marvel Cinematic Universe rollercoaster since its inception, I can confidently say that the comeback of Marvel Studios in 2024 has been nothing short of spectacular! The return of Deadpool and Wolverine, the mature storytelling in Echo, and the continuation of X-Men ’97 have made this year a delight for fans like me.

2024 saw Marvel Studios making a remarkable recovery from a relatively uneventful 2023. From unveiling the mature-rated TV series “Echo”, to the highly anticipated return of movies with “Deadpool” and “Wolverine”, and the release of this year’s hit “Agatha All Along”, Marvel’s resurgence in 2024 has been nothing short of spectacular. However, the crowning achievement could very well be the success of “X-Men ’97”.

The first animated series produced under the Marvel Animation brand, streaming on Disney Plus, serves as a sequel to the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series. Some of the original cast members have reprised their roles in this new show. Like its predecessor, it received acclaim for its mature storytelling and its deep exploration of various narratives during its 10-episode inaugural season.

In a more casual tone, it seems that X-Men ’97 remained sincere in its storytelling when it was first released, and it appears its second season may carry on this trend, potentially with an even greater depth of seriousness.

X-Men ’97 star reveals second season will be “darker

At the Edmonton Expo, Ross Marquand disclosed that the upcoming second season of X-Men ’97 will be more “intense” than its predecessor. The actor, who portrays Professor Charles Xavier in the reboot, didn’t elaborate on how this could be achieved, but the idea is intriguing given that the first season was already quite intense.

Season 1 showcased several intense plotlines, such as the brutal attack on Genosha where the Mutants were massacred, leading to the death of X-Men member Gambit. Additionally, a story arc centered around the controversial notion of a mutant cure was introduced, serving to intensify the oppression faced by mutants.

Regarding potential directions for the story moving forward, certain plot points from the Season 1 finale were left unresolved, any one of which could steer X-Men ’97 towards the more ominous realms hinted at by Marquand.

In the final scenes of the season finale, the X-Men found themselves face to face with Apocalypse during his early years, having been sent back in time. En Sabah Nur, unaware of the terror he will eventually embody, may need to be allied with by the X-Men for their return to their own era. This alliance could have significant implications for the timeline and potentially result in an Apocalypse-dominated season, which might prove to be a challenging ordeal for the X-Men.

Discussing the Apocalypse, the mid-credits scene of the last episode depicted the contemporary version of the character in Genosha, observing the destruction left by a tragic massacre involving mutants. Intriguingly, he picked up one of Gambit’s trademark playing cards, hinting strongly that the cherished X-Men figure may return to life as one of Apocalypse’s Four Horsemen.

Without a doubt, Gambit’s demise in the initial season of X-Men ’97 marked one of the most somber moments in the series. His relationship with Rogue had finally reached a point where they were open and sincere about their feelings, only for it to be cruelly snatched away. If Gambit were to reappear as a villain, particularly as one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen, it would certainly set the stage for the darker season that Marquand hinted at.
