X-Men ’97: Behind-the-Scenes Look at Season 1’s Abandoned Kitty Pryde & Colossus Ending
Approximately a year ago, the Season 1 finale of X-Men ’97 made its way onto Disney+, leaving many of the series’ main characters either trapped in ancient Egypt or the year 3960 AD. However, six months following the X-Men’s vanishing act, Bishop disclosed to underestimated character Forge what transpired, and they are currently brainstorming a strategy to save them. X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo recently divulged that an alternate ending was initially planned featuring Kitty Pryde and Colossus, but I’m content with the Bishop version taking precedence instead.
How Kitty Pryde And Colossus Factored Into X-Men ’97 Season 1’s Alternate Ending
In reference to his personal account, DeMayo (who was let go by Marvel just before the start of X-Men ’97 Season 1) posted script snippets demonstrating how Kitty Pryde and Colossus temporarily replaced Bishop in alerting Forge about the X-Men being stuck in time. One evening, while in Storm’s room, Forge overhears the X-Mansion’s alarm blaring and unexpectedly finds himself teleported into Jubilee’s room on the floor below. There, he is met by Kitty Pryde and her diminutive dragon companion Lockheed, with Kitty initially mistaking Forge for an intruder at first.
If you didn’t catch X-Men ’97 Season 1 last year, here’s your chance! You can subscribe to Disney+ for as low as $9.99 a month with their new ad-supported plan. Or, opt for an ad-free experience at $15.99 a month. Alternatively, save 16% and pre-pay $159.99 for an entire year of entertainment. No matter which option you select, both you and I can eagerly anticipate Season 2! Check out the deal now.
Afterwards, Colossus enters the room, and he along with Kitty discuss a matter that isn’t about where the X-Men are located, but rather when they exist. This alternate ending leads to Kitty proposing that Forge constructs a time machine, paving the way for X-Men ’97 Season 2, which will depict Apocalypse in both ancient Egypt and modern times. However, neither of these characters were part of X-Men ’97 Season 1, though Colossus did make a guest appearance in its precursor, X-Men: The Animated Series. Shadowcat was not included in the original series; instead, Jubilee assumed a similar role to Kitty in her early comic book portrayals.
Why I’m Glad X-Men ’97 Season 1’s Ending Used Bishop Instead
It’d be great if characters like Kitty Pryde and Colossus could make an appearance in X-Men ’97 at some stage, either in Season 2 or ideally Season 3. But if they can’t, I hope the writers find a way to work them into the storyline. As for Bishop informing Forge about what happened to the X-Men after their battle with Bastion, it was smart to have Bishop do that instead of Kitty and Colossus, since Bishop, like Cable, is a time traveler from a future in turmoil. He’d be more likely to know where they went following the battle. Additionally, the dialogue in these script pages feels a bit awkward, so it’s probably best this version of the scene wasn’t included.

To recap, Cyclops and Jean Grey find themselves in the year 3960 AD; Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Professor X, and Magneto have been transported to Ancient Egypt in 3,000 B.C.; the whereabouts of Wolverine, Storm, and Morph are currently unknown; Jubilee and Sunspot remain in the present day along with Forge. Furthermore, it appears that Gambit, who perished during the Genosha incident, could potentially be resurrected by Apocalypse as hinted at in the mid-credits scene of Season 1 finale. In addition to this, X-Men ’97 Season 2 will introduce Neve Campbell’s character, Polaris.
As a dedicated fan eagerly awaiting the comeback of my favorite animated series in 2026, I can’t help but wonder how Forge and Bishop will orchestrate the rescue mission for the stranded X-Men. Just like the rest of us, Beau DeMayo will uncover the details as he pens the scripts for Season 2, which have been refined under the watchful eye of Matthew Chauncey, the mastermind behind Season 3.
