X-Me ’97 Creator Beau DeMayo Marvel Studios Call-Out Post

The trailer for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, which unexpectedly included the X-Men, reportedly upset its creator, Beau DeMayo.

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Beau DeMayo, a writer for X-Men ’97, discussed the challenges he faced while working with Marvel Studios to modernize the X-Men through animation. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the artists involved and expressed frustration that the show faced studio resistance when they chose a different character than Wolverine as a central focus. He found it ironic to see praise for ‘honoring Cyclops’ in a recent trailer, as the decision to do so was a direct response to that initial resistance.

The executive producer of X-Men 97 also expressed gratitude to Chase Conley and Emi Yonemura for their support in bringing his vision for Cyclops to life.

What Else Did Beau DeMayo Say On Social Media About Marvel Studios?

He expressed his concerns about the current path of Marvel Studios, noting a pattern he’s observed. He pointed out that while Marvel Studios often acknowledges the contributions of white creators like Jon Favreau in shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they frequently overlook the vital work of Black, queer, Asian, and Latino colleagues who were instrumental in proving the potential of characters like Cyclops. He believes this undermines the argument that diversity initiatives are simply ‘agendas,’ as support for Cyclops was a result of a united team effort.

DeMayo also voiced concerns on X (formerly Twitter) about the marketing for Avengers: Doomsday, connecting it to a previous discussion about a lack of diversity in superhero films. He pointed out that all three released trailers featured white male characters, suggesting this wasn’t accidental. “Trailer #1 — white male. Trailer #2 – white male. Trailer #3 – white male… The fact folks think this isn’t by design is the epitome of looking the other way…” he posted in response to the leaked trailers.

DeMayo expressed his disappointment with some key people at Marvel Studios. He specifically called out the Russo brothers, stating it was frustrating to see them overlook the effort and contributions of the X-Men 97 team, especially considering they achieved so much with limited resources. Ultimately, DeMayo emphasized that fan enjoyment is the most important thing, and he encouraged X-Men fans to show their appreciation for the artists and animators who brought the show to life.

Neither Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, nor the Russo brothers have publicly addressed comments made by DeMayo on social media. Despite this, DeMayo continued to share his critiques of Marvel’s projects online. His latest post was a tribute to Stan Lee, the creator of Marvel Comics, in honor of his birthday.

X-Men ’97 is streaming on Disney+.
