X-Files star Gillian Anderson reveals her character FBI Agent Scully has inspired generations of girls to explore careers in science and mathematics
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary impact Gillian Anderson‘s portrayal of Agent Scully has had on countless lives, especially young women who have been inspired to pursue careers in STEM. It’s simply mind-blowing to think that my fandom has played a small part in shaping the future of science and technology!
She is most recognized for her portrayal of FBI Special Agent Scully, a character who is often skeptical, yet uses scientific reasoning and logic to explore supposed supernatural cases alongside partner Mulder on the popular TV series “The X-Files.
Currently, Gillian Anderson, the actress known for her role in the series alongside David Duchovny, has disclosed that her character has served as a catalyst for numerous girls to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) – an inspiration that extends to the point where she’s encountered female scientists who credit their careers directly to her.
Referring to it as the ‘Scully impact’, Ms. Anderson, aged 56, has confessed that she becomes emotional when encountering female admirers of the science fiction show who were motivated to pursue scientific careers due to her character’s influence.
I’ve encountered scientists who have expressed that they are currently practicing scientists working in a laboratory, attributing their career choice to the character Scully.
Ms Anderson, a passionate advocate for women’s rights, expressed that she often found it deeply touching, saying this in reference to her experiences with Duchovny over the course of almost a decade, from 1993 to 2002, which they would later revisit.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, she shared that during her time as Scully, a phenomenon called the ‘Scully effect’ emerged. This effect saw young girls becoming interested in science and pursuing it as a career, having been motivated by my character.
“Engaging with a young lady who entered STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) due to Scully remains my favorite fan encounter. Occasionally, I meet someone who continues to express this.
Anderson spoke up following her fellow actor David Duchovny’s disclosure in the previous month about their strained collaboration during X-Files filming. This revelation had led the show’s creator to propose that they undergo relationship counseling together.
In the most recent installment of Duchovny’s Lemonada Media podcast, titled “Fail Better,” the actor shared a story about instances where they clashed with creator Chris Carter, which eventually led to Carter proposing an unconventional resolution.
On the show, Anderson, aged 56, made an appearance. Although she couldn’t specifically recollect that specific chat, she did remind herself of their strained professional bond during that period, as they often went silent towards each other between takes for extended periods.
