X Factor Stars Shock Fans with 8-Year Engagement After Surprise Proposal in Scotland

On Tuesday, two former X Factor contestants revealed their decision to get engaged, a move that comes eight years after they initially crossed paths during the show.

Over the weekend, Jamaal Shurland of the R&B band Rak-Su surprised his partner, Shereen Cutkelvin, by proposing marriage in Scotland.

Shereen belongs to the family band The Cutkelvins, which includes her brothers Kyle and Jay. They advanced to the semifinals during the fourteenth season in 2017.

In the final round, Jamaal’s band Rak-Su emerged victorious even though they faced off against Grace Davies. However, it was the public who ultimately chose to place the group at the top.

On Instagram, Shereen posted a collection of affectionate pictures, showcasing her new engagement ring.

In his childhood hometown, where it was cold enough for everyone to have red noses due to the frosty weather, the singer penned a song that spoke about a proposal taking place and featured a stunning backdrop of the moon.

She added: ‘It was completely unexpected (hence the no manicure lol).’

Rak-Su, who gained a massive fanbase after appearing on the show, once shared that their name is derived from the concept “Tracks vs Suits,” symbolizing “Music and Fun” versus “Grown-up Life.

Jamal performs with Ashley Fongho and Myles Stephenson as part of their band, but Mustafa Rahimtulla paused his musical career in the year 2020.

During their time on The X Factor, the group articulated that the essence of their group revolves around continuously creating music and sharing positive energy.

The distinctive music style of the band Rak-Su, praised as something unprecedented by X Factor judges, has been characterized as vibrant and encompassing various genres including grime, R&B, hip-hop, and spoken word.

Following their victory, an impressive five of their tracks soared to the iTunes Top 10, with the revamped Dimelo, featuring Wyclef Jean and Naughty Boy, leading the pack and claiming the number one spot on the charts.

They took third place along with Dimelo, fourth place with their audition tune “I’m Feeling You”, then came “Mona Lisa” in fifth and “Mamacita” in sixth position.

Recently, Rak-Su teamed up with artists named andrë and TWNTY4 for the song “Patience,” and also joined forces with Late Checkout on a track titled “Eastside.

In July, Shereen replaced Edith Bowman on BBC Scotland’s coverage of Glasgow’s TRNSMT Festival. 

Apart from that, she boasts several hosting roles under her belt. For instance, she has co-hosted a radio program on BBC Radio Scotland, handled the early morning shift on Radio 1, and presented CBBC’s music magazine show Love, Love, Love.
