15 years post her stint on the talent series, The X Factor’s performer Mary Byrne appeared nearly unchanged during her recent promotion event for her new venture.

In 2010, the Irish vocalist, now 65 years old, initially gained notice when she left the X Factor judges – Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Cheryl, and Katy Perry – astonished with an exceptional performance of I Who Have Nothing by Tom Jones during her audition.

Despite wowing the audiences week after week, she didn’t win and ended up coming in fifth place.

Currently, the ex-Tesco employee has chosen to part ways with her brown hair and bangs, opting instead for a short, white-blonde cropped hairstyle.

Though singing remains her heart’s delight, Mary has ventured into different paths, recently embarking on a new professional journey. She is now a podcaster, having initiated The Wise Owl Wans Podcast together with Irish actress and writer Eilish O’Carroll, 72, in October.

This podcast is known for being “the lively conversation between two highly accomplished Irish women who have lived through a lot.” In this show, Mary and Eilish discuss topics such as love, life, and family.

A few short weeks back, Mary exuded elegance wearing a stylish pink animal print blouse and sporting a trendy side-parted short hairstyle while discussing an upcoming episode on the program.

Currently, the actor from Ballyfermot has become a popular figure in Pantomime, as Mary was recently seen playing the role of the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella at the Liberty Panto in Dublin.

With flamboyant pink-hued tresses styled to rock, a grandiose white gown adorned with frills, and an oversized magic staff in hand, Mary seemed right at home as she prepared to embody her role for publicity shots related to the upcoming performance.

Apart from excelling in pantomime and podcasting, Mary further showcased her abilities by embarking on a nationwide tour of Ireland with her solo performance titled “Check Me Out.” This captivating one-woman show offers an evening filled with music and anecdotes to delight her audience.

Over the course of my career, I’ve had the privilege of sharing stages with Cliff Richard, even on Mediterranean cruise ships.

While also starred Menopause: The Musical alongside Linda Nolan.

The X Factor series that Mary oversaw became well-known as the year One Direction was created, with Matt Cardle ultimately winning the competition.

Recently, the star made news as she emotionally honored Liam Payne of One Direction and shared her struggle in accepting the sad reality of his passing.

At the age of 31, Liam fell a total of 45 feet from the third level down into the courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires during the month of October.

In the ITV show’s semifinal, Mary advanced further than One Direction who placed third. Later on, Mary disclosed that her last conversation with Liam occurred in 2018. During this conversation, Liam shared with her some of his personal challenges he faced as a result of fame.

She shared with The Sun: “I wouldn’t claim he wasn’t destined for fame, but I believe they advanced too rapidly, reaching levels that were unsustainable. They essentially exhausted themselves after just five years.

Mary mentioned that Liam was finding it incredibly challenging because he had to stay in hotels while traveling around the globe, and due to large groups of fans, he couldn’t leave his room.

In response to my initial statement, which was positive, he later expressed a different opinion, saying, “It’s actually quite challenging, and it’s not as I anticipated.

She continued, expressing, “I’ve kept tabs on his progress, and I can’t help but feel a sense of pride, as if I were a mother watching her children succeed. In our home, I served as the maternal figure.

Before acknowledging that she has no idea where to start in trying to comprehend what Liam’s mother might be experiencing following his demise.

In other places, Mary has shared about her feelings towards performing, mentioning that although she gained fame from The X Factor and Panto, she is essentially an introverted individual who adopts another character when she steps up to the microphone.

She shared with Sunday World: “People might not know this, but I’m actually quite reserved. However, when I step onto the stage, I transform. I often say that it’s not Mary Byrne up there, it’s the character I embody… the woman within me who emerges. It’s a unique experience because you’re not simply being yourself; you’re becoming someone else. Regrettably, at times, mental health can erode one’s confidence and hinder self-acceptance.

While I was at Tesco, I was actually putting on an act. Reflecting on those times, when I interacted with customers, sang for them, and shared laughter with them, I was essentially concealing the true Mary and allowing her to surface during my work hours.

‘I am who I am, and I have to learn to accept myself and move forward. It seems that we all put on masks in one way or another, pretending to be okay or even convincing ourselves that we are. We act daily to present an image of being fine.’

She further mentioned that she feels significantly more “content” nowadays and is essentially an entirely “changed” individual compared to her state during the pandemic. She emphasized that although she’ll always cherish that past self, she finds herself more “satisfied” when performing on stage.
