WWE needs to flesh out the midcard for the women on the main roster

As a gamer with over two decades of WWE fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that we are finally seeing some promising changes in the women’s division. However, as a seasoned viewer who has witnessed countless underutilized talents, it is high time for WWE to step up their game and introduce a midcard title on the main roster.

With WWE focusing more on enhancing their women’s division, there’s still plenty of potential for further development. Currently, we’re engaged by two captivating narratives unfolding within the women’s division on Monday Night Raw and Friday Night Smackdown. For instance, Liv Morgan and Rhea Ripley are battling over Dominik Mysterio’s affections, while Tiffany Stratton is gradually setting up a Money In The Bank cash-in against her friend Nia Jax – these are real, ongoing stories in the women’s division.

A significant step forward for women’s wrestling within WWE was the introduction of the NXT Women’s North American Championship this past spring. Current titleholder Kelani Jordan has been exceptional in establishing this new championship on the developmental brand, providing a strong model for what we might anticipate on the main roster in the future.

It is time for WWE to flesh out a women’s midcard title on the main roster

Based on WWE NXT’s successful approach to developing mid-tier women’s titles, it seems appropriate for the main roster to emulate this strategy now. Regrettably, there are several talented female wrestlers who frequently go unutilized or entirely overlooked during shows. Apart from the two storylines mentioned previously in this article, what additional narratives exist within the women’s division on the main roster? This week, Michin and Jax will compete for the WWE Women’s Championship on Smackdown, although not at Bash in Berlin. In contrast, Morgan and Ripley will square off in a mixed tag team match during Bash in Berlin. As such, the upcoming Pay-Per-View event will feature only one women’s championship match, which involves the Women’s Tag Team title contest.

Once more, another Performance Center showcase lacking a diverse roster of women, with only six in total, and four confined to a single match. The allure of NXT lies significantly in its thoughtful female talent bookings each Tuesday. Regrettably, the main roster fails to mirror this same approach.

On Smackdown’s lineup, there are talented women such as Michin, Chelsea Green, Piper Niven, Indi Hartwell, Candice LeRae, Blair Davenport, Elektra Lopez, Naomi, B-Fab, and Tegan Nox. However, most of them either don’t get much screen time each week or only have brief appearances lasting around 3 minutes. In comparison, Raw’s roster has a slightly better utilization rate, but even there, talents like Kiana James, Ivy Nile, Natalya, and Zelina Vega are not used as extensively as they could be.

It seems we’re leaning more towards a Women’s Trio Championship rather than mid-tier competition. However, this could be problematic given the inconsistency in the Women’s Tag Team Division at present. The Unholy Union, composed of Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre, have barely appeared on TV since winning the titles at Clash at the Castle. Introducing another Women’s Tag Title might compel random superstars to team up, creating a trio, which WWE might not be ready for. Additionally, some of the suggested names (like Pure Fusion Collective) have been underwhelming.

Some say that WWE doesn’t need more titles and that it won’t solve WWE’s problems with booking the women’s division. The simple response to those who feel that way is more titles equals more storylines — it’s really that simple. Again, look at the current landscape on NXT. Instead of all of the focus being on NXT Women’s Champion Roxanne Perez’ upcoming match against Jaida Parker at No Mercy, there will also be another title match for the NXT Women’s North American title between Kelani Jordan and Wendy Choo. Choo and Jordan’s feud has been building for quite a while now since Choo’s return to the ring.

When the main roster introduces a midcard title for the women’s division, it will significantly improve the quality of women’s wrestling similar to how it has boosted NXT. It is also essential to transfer the current NXT female wrestlers to the main roster at some point. The arrival of a midcard title would prevent newcomers like James (Kiana) from being overshadowed, as she has been since her move to Raw earlier this year. The time for the main roster to create a women’s midcard title is now.
