WWE needs to add both women’s midcard titles and improved booking for the divisions

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours logged into the world of wrestling, I can’t help but see the potential goldmine that is this rumor about WWE adding midcard championships to Raw and SmackDown.

A buzz is building online about the possibility that WWE could introduce a mid-level championship for Monday Night Raw and SmackDown. The debate is evenly split, but upon closer inspection, this seems like a significant move both shows require. Introducing new titles would offer some benefits, but the main problem lies in creating more storylines beyond the title picture. In other words, there’s a need to develop more rivalries outside the championship scenes.

On both WWE shows, the roster is filled with top-notch talent. Nia Jax and Liv Morgan are currently champions on each show, but many other women in their divisions have the potential to become stars. Women like IYO Sky, Bianca Belair, Tiffany Stratton, Kairi Sane, Jade Cargill, and more all deserve screen time, not just when they’re vying for the championship. Introducing mid-tier titles could help, but it wouldn’t solve the issue completely as some might suggest.

Reflect upon Gunther’s time as WWE Intercontinental Champion, a period where he truly dominated professional wrestling, attracting a massive following with every move he made. However, it wasn’t just Gunther who shone; the WWE skillfully elevated those around him as well. As his opponents appeared more formidable, Gunther’s victories were all the more impressive. This same approach should be applied to the women’s midcard and emerging talents. Simply bestowing a title upon someone doesn’t automatically boost their appeal or that of their opponents. The formula requires more depth, and this is what seems to be lacking in the main card.

In a refreshingly effective manner, WWE NXT manages the current scenario remarkably well. Characters like Ethan Page, Oba Femi, Roxanne Perez, Kelani Jordan, Axiom, and Nathan Frazer all seem significant in their unique ways. Each one of them has storylines revolving around titles that could headline a show independently, given the intensity of their feuds. This is particularly evident with Roxanne Perez’s reign as champion, considering there are numerous women who are being skillfully scripted, ready to ascend to main event status at any moment. Notably, NXT achieves this remarkable balance within just two hours of airtime each week. If such thoughtful storytelling can occur in NXT, it’s reasonable to expect the same quality on SmackDown and Raw as well.

Introducing titles in the women’s division could greatly benefit many wrestlers currently on the roster, such as Chelsea Green, Piper Niven, Michin, Naomi, and others. These talents are currently absent from the championship picture, but having a title to strive for would give them a new goal. However, it is important to note that this isn’t the only solution, as WWE needs to adopt a booking strategy similar to NXT in order to make more individuals matter on each show and make a bigger impact overall.
