WWE failed to celebrate The New Day on Monday Night Raw

As a long-time fan of professional wrestling and someone who has witnessed the rise of some truly iconic factions over the years, I can’t help but feel that The New Day deserves more recognition than they’ve received from WWE. Their ten-year anniversary was recently celebrated off-screen, and it’s disappointing that this milestone wasn’t acknowledged on a recent episode of WWE Raw.

Factions are one of the best aspects of professional wrestling. Getting all the “cool kids” together in one group has created some of the most exciting moments in the industry. In the eyes of many, there’s one group that stands out as the most important faction, especially in recent memory. The New Day brought together Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Big E at a time when they not only needed each other, but a large segment of wrestling fans needed them. The group recently celebrated a decade and that moment should have been recognized on WWE Raw.

Back in the summer of 2014, on July 21 to be exact, my world of professional wrestling was about to change in a way I could hardly imagine at the time. Here I was, just an avid fan, watching as Woods, dressed up as a charismatic pastor with a touch of The Five Heartbeats’ vibe, approached Kingston and E with a message. He urged them to put aside their differences and join forces instead of constantly clashing in the ring. In retrospect, this seemingly insignificant encounter might turn out to be one of the most pivotal moments for Black wrestlers and their fans during this era.

From that point on, The New Day’s story is widely recognized and extensively recorded. Not only did they reach their full potential as a team, but both the members and their dedicated fans managed to propel them into successful solo careers. Their combined and individual accomplishments make them deserving inductees into the WWE Hall of Fame. Surprisingly, WWE overlooked recognizing this group during the most recent episode of Monday Night Raw.

Instead, fans were treated to an engaging encounter between The Final Testament and Woods, teaming up with the reformed Alpha Academy (Otis and Tozawa). While this bout offered amusing moments, its primary purpose seemed to be fueling the anticipated clash between Woods and Karrion Kross, as well as advancing Chad Gable’s narrative. It would have been more rewarding for fans if The New Day’s long-standing partnership (a decade strong) had received some recognition through commentary during the match.

Currently, Triple H’s wrestling decisions regarding Black men in the spotlight have drawn criticism from many fans. Every year, social media debates resurface over his past promo against Booker T and its impact on the portrayal of Black male wrestlers today. The recent rumors of Bobby Lashley and MVP possibly leaving WWE add fuel to these discussions. Neglecting to highlight The New Day could add more fuel to fans’ concerns about the representation of certain demographics in WWE.

It’s important to acknowledge The New Day’s significant contribution to the annals of professional wrestling. As a trailblazing threesome of Black men, they paved the way not just for their own success but also opened doors for future Black talent in the industry. Regrettably, this momentous achievement went unrecognized, representing a lost opportunity to celebrate their groundbreaking accomplishments.
