WWE: Cody Rhodes will lose the WWE Undisputed Championship to the Rock

As a lifelong wrestling fan who’s seen more than a few title reigns come and go, I must say that Cody Rhodes’ current WWE Title run has been quite intriguing. It’s reminiscent of John Cena’s days as the top babyface, where the audience loved to hate him. But let’s not forget, it was those very same moments that made Cena a legend in this industry.

At WrestleMania 40 in April, Cody Rhodes claimed his first WWE Championship from Roman Reigns, but his title reign has faced frequent criticism for being lackluster. This critique might stem from the fact that Cody is positioned as the leading good guy (babyface) within the company, and his over-promotion may have diminished his popularity among fans. Many top babyfaces throughout wrestling history have experienced a similar fate, with John Cena serving as a notable example of someone who was exceptionally talented yet widely disliked in this role. Despite this, Cody continues to wear the WWE Title, making him a prime target for criticism and competition.

Moving forward, let’s zero in on the three strongest contenders aiming to unseat Cody Rhodes en route to WWE WrestleMania 31.

Dark Horse: Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens (KO) betrayed Cody after their rivalry reignited following Bad Blood, as KO is displeased with Cody’s recent alliance with their long-time adversary, Roman Reigns. This enmity between the two was particularly intense during Reigns’ reign of chaos. Back in 2007, Orton was the first opponent for Cody within the WWE, and he also served as a mentor to Cody. Despite previous encounters between them, Orton has yet to face this new version of Cody since his return to the WWE in 2022. Although Orton has strong reasons to dethrone Cody, it would make for more impactful storytelling if Cody were to defeat Orton. This victory would demonstrate that he is no longer just a supporting figure as he once was in Orton’s stable. Instead, he has evolved into a main event player who is eager to prove to his mentor why he truly deserved to be his top protege.

Roman Reigns retains an option for another WWE Championship fight, effectively enabling him to summon a title challenge in what could be the third bout between him and Cody. At WrestleMania 39, Reigns emerged victorious over Cody, but at WrestleMania 40, Cody managed to return the favor against Roman. Given their current 1-1 standing, it’s just a question of when they’ll settle their score. Currently, Cody and Reigns are aligned in their rivalries with The Bloodline, but as we approach WrestleMania 41, fans might push for dissolution of this alliance. There’s even speculation about a triple-threat world title contest involving Roman, Cody, and The Rock.

At Mania 40’s first night, The Rock defeated Cody Rhodes, and later on Raw following Mania, they switched titles. It seems that The Rock is set to end Cody’s title reign at the Royal Rumble in 2025, much like he did with CM Punk back in 2013 at the Royal Rumble. The Rock will then carry the WWE Championship into Mania and face Roman Reigns for the title. Unlike what transpired between Cena and Rock versus CM Punk years ago, Cody Rhodes is expected to receive a fair rematch and be included in the title match with Reigns and The Rock at WrestleMania 41.
