WWE 2K25 Review: Is This the Ultimate Wrestling Experience?

In the first play of WWE 2K25, Paul Heyman challenges you with a question that echoes through the world of wrestling games: “Are you ready to take on the challenge?” However, considering the new features of this edition, a more fitting query could be: “Do you have enough funds for purchasing Virtual Currency to enhance your wrestler in our innovative mode, The Island?” Much like NBA 2K games, WWE 2K25 now includes a microtransaction-based social hub where you can create and rise through the ranks of a custom Superstar from obscurity to the WWE. While it’s possible to achieve success without spending VC, it certainly makes the process faster and smoother. Despite the presence of in-game purchases, the core WWE experience remains robust and engaging in WWE 2K25.

In essence, WWE 2K25 maintains its robustness, much like its predecessor from last year, providing minor enhancements over previous versions. A significant change this time is the option to observe action from a fixed third-person view during online multiplayer games, allowing for easier focus on your character amidst the commotion. While it may not seem like much, it’s certainly an improvement. Overall, WWE 2K25 retains its instant and intuitive playability, similar to WWE 2K22 developed by Visual Concepts post the rocky launch of WWE 2K20. For newcomers or those who need a refresher, there’s a comprehensive tutorial available.

In the latest edition of this game, matches between participants of any gender are now possible, breaking down previous restrictions on opponents. Exciting features such as chain wrestling, diving off barricades, Bloodline Rules Matches, and Underground Match type have been included, along with new brawl locations like WWE Archives and NXT Parking Lot. However, the standout addition is The Island, available exclusively on the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 versions of the game.

Titled “The Island” or “The Island of Relevancy,” this year’s exciting expansion in WWE 2K25, offers an engaging, compact environment for exploration. Similar to the bustling ‘The City’ in NBA 2K, you’ll encounter other players, venues for competitive matches, and quests leading up to your WWE journey. The Island is quite time-consuming, but beware, Virtual Currency (VC) plays a significant role here. Shops demand VC in exchange for branded gear to customize your character, and it’s essential for earning skill points to enhance your growing Superstar’s attributes. Despite the need to invest money, there’s still enjoyment to be found without spending cash. It’s important to note that The Island is a new game mode, offering an additional feature on top of all the other exciting elements in WWE 2K25.

When you’re away from The Island and aiming to make an impression on Roman Reigns, the traditional elements are all in place, with the 2K Showcase this year taking you through significant events from the Anoa’i, Fatu, and Maivia family saga, collectively known as ‘The Bloodline’. Paul Heyman narrates each match, with comments from Reigns and other associated Superstars, adding depth and insight to the action. As always, there’s a series of tasks to accomplish to reenact history, but now you can also alter history, completing a sequence of tasks to shift the outcome of a match and sway things in The Bloodline’s favor. It’s intriguing content, although all matches now play out entirely within the game engine, so while there’s impressive archival footage used, there are no more transitions to video, which smoothly merges into gameplay, and that’s somewhat disappointing.

The 2K Showcase continues to stand out, and when combined with the card-based MyFaction mode, the traditional MyGM mode, the expansive Universe mode, and the story-driven MyRise mode, there are countless hours of entertainment available before you even touch local or online multiplayer. Essentially, My Faction and MyGM offer familiar experiences, but MyRise brings something fresh with a new narrative involving both male and female custom Superstars. In this mode, you engage in conversations with WWE stars to influence the story’s direction, encounter rivals, and stir up some trouble as a flamboyant newcomer. You can opt for a ‘confident and brash’, ‘humorous’, or ‘manipulative’ persona, each with distinct dialogues, events, and outcomes – it’s quite immersive.

By combining all the features, you get another intense season of wrestling in WWE 2K25. With multiple modes to explore, you might spend almost an entire year fully immersing yourself. The roster is incredibly extensive, boasting over 300 characters to play as. This game plays exceptionally well, has a visually appealing design, and delivers impacts similar to Stone Cold Stunner or Roman Reigns Spear – in other words, it’s top-notch quality.
