Emerald Fennell’s hotly-anticipated reinvention of Wuthering Heights has finally hit cinemas. 

Moviegoers are already calling the epic historical drama the best film of the year, sharing their emotional reactions online and saying it left them in tears.

A new film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s famous novel, Wuthering Heights, was released in theaters yesterday. Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi play the roles of the tragic lovers, Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff.

This love story unfolds on the dramatic Yorkshire moors, following a powerful but ultimately damaging connection between two unforgettable characters.

We won’t reveal the ending here at the Daily Mail – but most people are likely already familiar with the story, as it’s been a popular read in schools and has been adapted for various media many times over the years.

Despite this, viewers immediately took to social media after the movie ended, with many sharing that they were surprised by how much they enjoyed it and were deeply moved, even crying.

Some even confessed that the movie inspired them to finally finish reading the famous novel.

Okay, look, I’m not ashamed to admit it – I completely lost it during the last twenty minutes of ‘Wuthering Heights.’ Seriously, the tears were flowing! And honestly? I don’t care what anyone else thinks, that book wrecked me in the best way. I absolutely loved it, like, intensely loved it.

Before the film came out, director Emerald Fennell, age 40, said she actually wanted people to feel strongly about it – even if that meant a very intense reaction.

In an interview with Time Out, she playfully admitted she hopes audiences will be very affectionate during the movie – ‘lots of kissing,’ as she put it, with a lighthearted apology to Cineworld. She also predicted the film will be so emotionally powerful that many viewers will be moved to tears.

The Oscar-winning director of Promising Young Woman has cautioned fans that her adaptation will be a reimagining of the story, focusing on its most sensual and visually appealing elements rather than a strict retelling.

Margot recently shared that she wasn’t the first choice for the main role in the movie. She also mentioned having to work with a dialect coach early in her career because her accent was considered quite poor.

The Australian actress opened up while appearing on The Graham Norton Show earlier this month. 

Okay, so I wasn’t supposed to be in front of the camera at all, honestly! I was totally happy just producing, it was a dream come true. But then we started talking about the role of Cathy, and I just… I couldn’t help myself. I had to try out. I just threw my hat in the ring, you know? I had to be a part of it, somehow!

I dreamed of acting in Emerald’s productions, and luckily, she wanted to work with me too. It was a great experience.

You know, early in my career, I remember being told my accent – a true Queensland sound – wasn’t quite right for television. Apparently, it was ‘too Australian’! It’s a reminder that sometimes, people try to fit you into a box, and it’s taken me a while to embrace what makes me, well, me.

Amanda Seyfried admitted that learning the Manchester accent for her role in The Testament of Ann Lee was really difficult. She said, ‘It was tough!’ when asked about it during an interview.

Margot explained that when she began her television career, she needed a dialect coach. Producers felt her natural Australian accent, stemming from her upbringing in Queensland, wasn’t quite right for the show Neighbours.

She explained that people had trouble understanding her because of her accent, and they told her she was very difficult to listen to.

Margot was joined on the sofa by Jacob, her co-star from the film ‘Wuthering Heights’. Jacob had previously collaborated with director Emerald on the movie ‘Saltburn’.

Margot explained that the movie’s main character, Emerald, is a big fan of the source material and wanted to recreate the emotional experience of reading it as a teenager.

She doesn’t just recreate the emotion; she transforms it into something new. I think it’s one of the most beautiful love stories ever told, with a fantastic cast and truly talented actors. Overall, it’s a wonderful movie.
