Wuthering heights costume designer hits back at fans blasting Margot Robbie’s ‘hideous’ outfits in the new adaptation

Jacqueline Durran, the costume designer for the new film ‘Wuthering Heights‘, has responded to criticism from fans who called Margot Robbie’s costumes ‘hideous’.

Margot, age 35, plays Cathy in the latest movie version of the story, and Jacob Elordi, 28, stars as Heathcliff.

The official trailer was released in November, before the film came out on February 13th, and since then, the movie has received criticism for its updated version of Emily Brontë’s story, particularly regarding the clothing choices.

People on social media are talking about the new movie and are excited that Charli XCX, known as the ‘Queen of BRAT’, is creating the music for it.

Okay, let me tell you, I was absolutely shocked seeing the costumes in the new ‘Wuthering Heights’ adaptation. Honestly? They weren’t nearly as impressive as those in ‘Bridgerton,’ and that’s really saying something! I’m a big fan of period dramas, and the costumes were just… disappointing, to say the least.

‘Cheap fantasy costume in Wuthering Heights’,

‘So basically, it’s a costume party with a twist. Sounds fun but confusing’,

Eventually, it becomes clear this feels less like a genuine creative work and more like something made to showcase a specific producer or actor.

They could have chosen something beautiful, but instead they picked a really unattractive dress that looked like a cheap, homemade craft project with a bow.

As a huge fan of historical films, I can usually forgive a little artistic license with the costumes, as long as they feel right for the period. But honestly, some outfits I’ve seen lately just seem completely made up – they don’t fit the time at all, and it’s really distracting!

‘They are AWFUL and i’m not even mentioning if they are historically accurate or not. Hideous .’

In a recent interview, two-time Oscar winner Jacqueline explained and supported her decisions regarding the film.

She told Vogue: ‘That idea of shiny surfaces is key to Cathy’s character and costumes.

It briefly pulls you away from the historical setting, but it was fun to combine the style of a Victorian dress with a very contemporary fabric.

The costume designer explained that the dates used for the costumes weren’t consistent, and the team hadn’t focused on being historically correct.

She explained they simply chose ‘clothes we like for each character.’

Margot recently revealed she was anxious about filming Wuthering Heights so soon after giving birth – just three months postpartum – and discussed the challenges of performing intimate scenes at that time.

After the release of her provocative film Saltburn, Margot Robbie pointed out that many viewers were anticipating overly explicit scenes. However, she did confess that some of the more intimate moments she shared with Jacob Elordi in the movie left her feeling flustered.

In an interview with British Vogue, Margot Robbie shared her experience returning to work only three months after giving birth to her son in October 2024 with her husband, Tom Ackerley. She explained how working on the film ‘Emerald’ helped ease her worries during that time.

The movie portrays Margot and Jacob as a couple reminiscent of Catherine and Heathcliff from Emily Brontë’s classic novel, Wuthering Heights. Published in 1850, Wuthering Heights is widely considered a landmark work of English literature.

Before the movie came out, it sparked debate because Cathy, a teenage character in the original story, is portrayed differently, and Heathcliff is depicted as having dark skin.

Despite the controversy, she’s avoided serious criticism. Sources note the work isn’t a direct copy, and Vogue suggests she’s embracing a deliberately provocative style, similar to what made her 2023 film, Saltburn, so successful.

Margot Robbie addressed the anticipation surrounding the film and its potentially explicit content, stating, ‘People are expecting it to be quite scandalous, but I believe audiences will be surprised by what they see.’

While the film definitely has some suggestive content, it’s ultimately a sweeping love story—much more romantic than overtly sexual. It’s a grand, epic romance at its core.

She explained the new film will likely appeal to fans of classic romantic movies, noting it’s been a long time since a similar film was released – she compared it to films like ‘The Notebook’ and ‘The English Patient,’ saying you’d have to go back many years to find something comparable.

Emerald has a unique ability: she evokes a strong physical reaction in people. It could feel like excitement – a swelling in your chest – or like a punch to the stomach that takes your breath away. Either way, she consistently triggers a noticeable physical response.

Jacob described Margot Robbie as incredibly talented and effortlessly capable. He joked that she seems to have a magical ability to do everything – like raising a child, filming a movie, producing several others, and still having time to socialize.

Emerald Fennell’s new film, an adaptation of ‘Wuthering Heights’, had a somewhat positive but not overwhelmingly enthusiastic response at a recent preview screening in Dallas, Texas, as reported by World of Reel.

The movie reportedly includes explicit scenes of masturbation described as intensely personal and unsettling, as well as a sex scene with elements of BDSM that involves the use of horse reins.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve noticed some interesting visual choices in this piece. It really focuses on intimate, tactile moments – things like the way egg yolk feels slipping through your fingers, or the almost forceful energy when kneading dough. It’s all about creating a very specific, sensual mood through these close-up, suggestive images.

The review highlights that Margot and Jacob both give strong performances and share a convincing connection on screen.

Charlotte Brontë was born in 1818 in West Yorkshire, one of six children. She lived most of her life in the village of Haworth, on the moorlands, where her father, Patrick, was a local priest.

Brontë experienced a difficult childhood, losing her mother at the young age of three, and then two older sisters when she was seven.

After experiencing a deeply upsetting event, the novelist coped by immersing herself in creative writing – she and her siblings wrote stories and poems together.

Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights is a deeply emotional and intense love story, reflecting the author’s own pain and feelings, and vividly mirroring the wild, rugged landscape of the Yorkshire Moors.
