Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights is a beloved novel, and while the recent film adaptation by Emerald Fennell hasn’t been a critical hit, it’s benefited from the popularity of its stars, Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Despite some troubling portrayals of relationships, the film is still seen as a romance, which helped it perform well over Valentine’s Day weekend, earning $83 million globally. Interestingly, Wuthering Heights made more money in just one week than Robbie’s previous film, I, Tonya, earned throughout its entire theatrical run, proving that critical success isn’t always tied to box office numbers.
Margot Robbie had already gained recognition in films like The Wolf of Wall Street and The Suicide Squad, but I, Tonya was the first movie to truly highlight her acting abilities. The film, directed by Craig Gillespie, successfully told the story of figure skater Tonya Harding and allowed Robbie to shine. While sports biopics are often made to win awards, I, Tonya stood out with its comedic approach. It balanced humor with the serious issues of abuse and violence, including the infamous attack on Nancy Kerrigan, offering a unique take on the genre.
With a 90% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and three Academy Award nominations – including a win for Alison Janney as Best Supporting Actress – I, Tonya proved to be just the first example of Margot Robbie’s impressive talent as a filmmaker.
Robbie Has Been a Major Risk-Taker in the Awards Circuit
Many actors are clearly hoping to win major awards, and while Robbie has given several outstanding performances, she hasn’t won an Oscar yet. What’s really interesting about following her career is the diverse range of films she chooses and how those movies are received by both viewers and critics.
As a film buff, I was thrilled to see Margot Robbie get an Oscar nomination for I, Tonya, and then another for Bombshell. But honestly, Barbie was a real standout! It racked up an incredible eight nominations, and while she didn’t win Best Actress, the film did win Best Original Song with Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s beautiful track, “What Was I Made For?”. What really impressed me, though, was that Barbie wasn’t just a box office smash, earning $1.4 billion globally – it was also one of the best-reviewed films of the year. A true achievement!
Throughout her career, Robbie has received significant praise and awards, but not every project has been a success. For example, the highly anticipated film Babylon, which featured a star-studded cast including Brad Pitt and Tobey Maguire, received some award nominations but ultimately earned a lukewarm 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Similarly, Amsterdam, directed by a well-respected filmmaker, David O. Russell, didn’t resonate with audiences or critics, garnering only 31% positive reviews that same year.
Despite a few unsuccessful films, Margot Robbie consistently surprises audiences with her choices, making her a captivating actress to follow.
Will ‘Wuthering Heights’ Score Any Awards?

Warner Bros. Pictures
While Wuthering Heights is expected to be a box office success, reviews have been mixed, with a 61% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Similar to Emerald Fennell’s previous film, Saltburn, this new adaptation is proving to be quite divisive, sparking disagreement among both viewers and critics.

Look, people seem pretty divided on how the movie handled the romance from the book, but even those who weren’t completely won over by the story itself really loved how it looked. The production design, the atmosphere… it was all top-notch. Honestly, I wouldn’t be shocked at all if it gets some awards attention for things like production design, makeup, and costumes – it definitely deserves it for those elements.
