Although it’s been less than a year since the release of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers – a challenging action RPG inspired by the ‘Souls’ series, developed by Leenzee and published by 505 Games – it seems the development team has now disbanded.
According to a recent report from GamerSky, citing sources on Bilibili and elsewhere, Xia Siyuan, the director of Wuchang, was let go before the Chinese New Year. Despite this, he continues to work on game development. Unfortunately, the Leenzee team faced a different outcome: they were offered outsourcing work but declined, resulting in the studio being disbanded and staff layoffs.
Just weeks after its release on July 24th, the game Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is facing difficulties. This news follows a recent trend of layoffs and restructuring within the gaming industry, most notably at Neople, the developers of the Soulslike game, The First Berserker: Khazan.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Was Not Particularly Well-Received
As it stands, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers maintains a 74 rating from Critics on Metacritic based on 90 reviews, and a 6.9 User Score based on 843 ratings. top-mob.com‘s Joshua Robertson awarded it a 3/5 in his review, writing, “Wuchang often shows glimpses of the game it could have been, but frustrations upon frustrations sour the whole experience.”
The game started strong on Steam, with over 131,000 players on its first day. However, the player count quickly dropped, losing around 50,000 players in just one week – a surprisingly steep decline for a game focused on single-player experiences.
As of today, Wuchang had 3,349 players online at its peak in the last 24 hours, and 514 were currently playing the game.
The game Wuchang faced waves of negative reviews, most recently last August after an update unintentionally made some characters invincible following criticism in China. Beyond that, players were frustrated with challenging bosses, poor performance, and overall design choices. As a result, the community stepped in to address the issues by creating their own patches and modifications.
