The union for Writers Guild of America workers has reached a deal on their first contract, bringing an end to a strike that lasted almost three months.
The Writers Guild Staff Union announced Friday that the proposed contract offers job security with protections against layoffs and seniority considerations, as well as increased pay. It also details a clear process for addressing workplace issues, starting with less severe steps before escalating to more formal grievances.
The union, representing 116 workers in departments like legal, communications, and residuals, will be voting on a new contract soon.
After the strike is officially approved, Writers Guild staff will go back to focusing on protecting writers’ rights and helping them increase their collective strength, according to the Bargaining Committee.
The WGA announced they’ve reached a preliminary agreement with the union for their first collective bargaining agreement, expressing their satisfaction with the progress.

Just weeks before the Writers Guild is scheduled to begin negotiations with major film and TV studios, its own employees are on strike, alleging unfair treatment at work. The strike is happening right outside the Guild’s offices.
If approved, this agreement would give all Writers Guild staff a minimum 12% raise over the next three years. The lowest salary would increase from $43,000 to $57,000, and staff would also receive stronger safeguards against the use of artificial intelligence.
The work stoppage started in February, before talks with the major studios were scheduled to begin, and workers claimed their employers weren’t negotiating honestly.

The actors’ union and film and TV studios have reached a preliminary agreement after restarting talks last week.
Things have been really difficult lately with the two unions at odds. Back in March, our union, the WGA, had to call off our awards show here in Los Angeles because we didn’t want to ask anyone to go against the striking members. Then, in April, it got even tougher – we lost our health insurance because we weren’t considered eligible anymore. It’s been a really challenging time for all of us.
Hollywood writers overwhelmingly approved their new contract with the studios last month, with over 90% of the union’s 11,000 members voting yes.
