Would you buy a ticket a year early for Christopher Nolan’s next movie?

Tickets for viewing Christopher Nolan’s future movie “The Odyssey” in IMAX 70mm format are now available for purchase; this is a full year before the film’s premiere.

In this upcoming screening on July 16, 2026, sixteen theaters spread across the United States are taking part, with seven of them located in California. By Thursday morning, several of these theaters had already sold out their tickets for the early showing of the film, among them being TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Regal Edwards Ontario Palace Stadium, Regal Irvine Spectrum, and Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk Hollywood.

Theaters located outside of the United States, such as those in Canada, Britain, Australia, and the Czech Republic, are also offering Imax tickets for sale a full year ahead.

Universal Pictures’ take on Homer’s ancient Greek story is building a significant level of excitement, mainly due to the impressive lineup of celebrities involved in the film. Notable names like Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Matt Damon are all part of the cast, with Damon portraying Odysseus.

Imax didn’t provide an immediate response to our query for comment. Both Universal and the exhibitors directed our questions towards Imax.

Canadian company Imax, based in Playa Vista, has become a significant contributor to box office earnings. Movies screened on Imax are earning larger box office returns, thanks in part to the higher ticket costs – a compelling incentive for studios and filmmakers. Moreover, audiences often view Imax movies as special events, which can entice them away from their homes and into cinemas.

In his latest movie, “Oppenheimer,” which won the Best Picture Oscar, Nolan intentionally shot with Imax in mind and utilized their cameras. This 2023 production amassed an astounding revenue of over $975 million worldwide, an impressive figure for an R-rated historical drama.

Directors Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”) and Ryan Coogler (“Sinners”) are also fans of the Imax format.

In response to the growing influence of Imax in the movie industry, major U.S. cinema chains like Cinemark, Regal, and Marcus are considering collaborating to promote their large-format theaters collectively. This move aims to balance out Imax’s impact across the industry, according to a report by Bloomberg published on Wednesday.
