Would Iron Man 2’s Sam Rockwell Ever Return To The MCU? Here’s What The Actor Said
In the two years following the release of “Iron Man” and Robert Downey Jr.’s rise to prominence in Hollywood, “Iron Man 2” pitted Downey’s Tony Stark against Sam Rockwell‘s Justin Hammer, a competitor in the arms industry who collaborated with Mickey Rourke’s Ivan Vanko. Rockwell resurrected his role as Hammer in the short film “All Hail the King” and an episode of the Disney+ exclusive animated series “What If…?”, but so far, he hasn’t made a significant comeback as a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t due to a lack of Rockwell’s willingness to participate in future Marvel films or television shows.
During a casual conversation about his upcoming film “The Bad Guys 2,” Sam Rockwell was interviewed by ComicBook. When inquired whether he was growing weary of discussing his Marvel Cinematic Universe character and the associated franchise, the actor expressed his thoughts on the matter.
Indeed, we share the same love for geeky pursuits! However, I’ve not received a call about being part of the Avengers filming yet. Fingers crossed, it might happen someday; right now, I’m just patiently waiting for that opportunity to arrive. I believe they’re filming somewhere, but unfortunately, I’m not on set.
It’s no surprise given the circumstances, but we can now confirm that the absence of Justin Hammer in Avengers: Doomsday is a fact. Despite the years that have passed since Iron Man 2, Sam Rockwell remains eager to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Such queries about Justin’s potential return don’t seem to wear him down as he shares the same curiosity, if not more so.
Since the “What If…?” series depicted a different universe’s Justin Hammer, we haven’t revisited the original timeline version of him since “All Hail the King” was included as an extra in the home media release of “Thor: The Dark World.” In the short film’s conclusion, Justin was seen sharing a cell with Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery, expressing frustration over the attention given to the villain from “Iron Man 3.” Given his criminal history, it’s likely that he remains imprisoned, but there’s always a possibility of him being released.

Explore Disney+ to catch up on Sam Rockwell’s character Justin Hammer across the Marvel Cinematic Universe collection of movies and shows. The ad-supported subscription plan is priced at $9.99 per month. Alternatively, opt for an ad-free experience by paying $15.99 monthly, or secure a 16% discount by pre-paying $159.99 annually. In light of the current Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects, it appears that there is no suitable role for Justin Hammer at this time. Previously, “Armor Wars” could have provided an excellent opportunity for Hammer’s comeback, given its plot revolving around James Rhodes tracking down individuals who have stolen Tony Stark’s technology. However, the status of “Armor Wars” is uncertain, as it currently lacks a release date.
I can only imagine what it would be like if Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios decided to reprise Justin Hammer, played by the talented Sam Rockwell. Until then, you can catch him bringing his A-game as Mr. Wolf in “The Bad Guys 2” hitting theaters on August 1st. And if you haven’t already, don’t miss out on his captivating performance in “The White Lotus,” available to stream now with an HBO Max subscription.
