The Star Wars films have been incredibly popular for decades, captivating fans of all ages. Although a new movie hasn’t been released since The Rise of Skywalker, the franchise has continued to grow with live-action TV shows available on Disney+. Andor was a particularly successful show, even winning an Emmy award. Recently, the showrunner Tony Gilroy discussed the possibility of working on future Star Wars movies and series.
Andor was a story that came before Rogue One, showing how rebels fought against the evil Empire before the events of A New Hope. Because the show was so popular, many fans are eager to see what creator Tony Gilroy will do next with the Star Wars universe. In an interview, Gilroy explained just how much time and effort he put into the series, which starred Diego Luna.
I worked on Andor for a year, and then spent six years on this new project. We filmed a massive amount – the equivalent of 24 hours of television. Looking at it that way, we essentially created eight Star Wars-length movies in just five years. That’s a huge undertaking, like making eight full-length films in a short period.
Does anyone else feel overwhelmed? Tony Gilroy is right – he quickly produced two full twelve-episode seasons of Andor. Compared to other Star Wars TV shows, which typically have fewer episodes and only one season, it feels like he’s created several movies set in the Star Wars universe without ever directing a theatrical film.

Okay, so Disney+ is still a major player, and if you’re a Star Wars fan – especially of shows like Andor – it’s pretty much essential. They’ve now got a more affordable entry point at just $11.99 a month, but be warned, that includes ads. If you want to skip the commercials, it’s $18.99 a month, or you can save a bit by going for the annual plan at $189.99 – that’s about 16% off. Overall, a solid streaming option, especially if you’re invested in the Disney universe.
The high quality of Andor clearly benefited from being a TV show, which makes the showrunner’s recent statements very understandable. Fans are still hoping to see him work on another Star Wars project, whether it’s a series or a movie. He later explained in the interview why he’s hesitant to return, stating:
Looking back, it’s hard to see myself returning to that situation, though I wouldn’t rule it out completely. It was an incredible experience, and I’m immensely proud of what we accomplished—probably the proudest I’ll ever be. We’re all very proud, not just of the final result, but of the way we worked together and the community we created. We took pride in our efficient process and everything we achieved – it really felt like a career highlight.
Tony Gilroy really enjoyed working on Andor and is justifiably pleased with the show’s two seasons. He hasn’t completely ruled out future Star Wars projects, but they aren’t a priority for him right now.
You can watch all of Andor now on Disney+. The next Star Wars film in theaters will be The Mandalorian and Grogu, scheduled for release on May 22nd, 2026.
