As a long-time admirer of Molly Meldrum, it’s heartbreaking to witness his struggle with health issues at this stage of his life. I remember him as a vibrant and vivacious personality who was the lifeblood of Australian music for decades. The images obtained by Daily Mail Australia paint a stark contrast to his energetic appearance just a few months ago at the Australian Open. It’s hard not to feel a pang of sadness when seeing him looking frail and tired, without one of his trademark hats.

EXCLUSIVE

A troubling set of photos featuring iconic Australian musician Molly Meldrum can now be shared, as he battles ongoing health issues at the age of 81.

In some recent photographs acquired by Daily Mail Australia, Meldrum appears quite delicate alongside his partner, Thai entrepreneur Yan Wongngam – both figures well-known within the music industry.

They stand in stark contrast with his more energetic appearance at the Australian Open in January.

In a single photo, the bald, well-known figure from TV appears to be napping on their couch at home in Melbourne, absent his signature hat and with an open mouth.

In another photo, you can see Meldrum lounging on the veranda, sporting a beard, and one of his slim hands resting on his chest, which suggests he’s taking a daytime nap.

According to a recent disclosure, Meldrum has been dealing with significant health issues and has mostly stepped back from participating in public events.

Next month marks the 50th anniversary of the debut of Countdown, the iconic ABC music program that catapulted Meldrum to fame, on Australian television screens.

Meldrum, who’s been making headlines due to unfavorable incidents in recent times, was conspicuously absent from the Royal Australian Mint event held in Melbourne last Wednesday for the unveiling of a special Countdown coin.

Gavin Wood, the host of the show, disclosed that his close friend had been battling health issues since he nearly lost his life after falling from a ladder in December 2011.

In a conversation with the Herald Sun, Wood expressed that the incident, which he referred to as ‘the fall’, was an incredibly unfortunate event.

In January, he will turn 82 years old. Throughout his entire life, he’s been a well-known figure, but now it seems like he’s choosing to live a more tranquil existence.

‘He is still Molly, still interested in music and still has it turned up to 11. He is still naughty, he has still got that spark that we love, but I think he is enjoying life being a normal person.’

Despite Meldrum missing out on the coin launch event, he still managed to issue a statement and consistently incorporated his well-known catchphrase when suggesting artists on the show.

‘Do yourself a favour and get one,’ he said. ‘Iconic Countdown lives on.

‘I am left with such fond memories of those days and a show that will never be forgotten.

I’m delighted to learn that our impact on the Australian music industry is being recognized, as a special commemorative coin is being produced.

Wood stated that his ex-colleague would be delighted to witness something as stunningly attractive and creatively innovative as the coins honoring the series which catapulted him into national fame.

According to Wood, the Countdown show, airing from November 8, 1974, to July 19, 1987, was a result of Meldrum’s passion and forward-thinking.

Meldrum deeply immersed himself in the program, making it an integral part of his life – he not only worked on it but also embraced it wholeheartedly. According to Wood, this program held immense significance for him.

Meldrum has remained out of the public limelight ever since his last controversy 18 months ago.

In March 2023, Meldrum gained notoriety when he was caught on camera publicly exposing himself and seemingly urinating on the floor during a Rod Stewart performance in Melbourne.

A clip captured by Daily Mail Australia depicted an individual exposing himself towards the conclusion of the pop star’s performance at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena.

He seemed as if he was urinating on the floor, all the while gazing up at the stage and sporting his signature cowboy hat.

The alarming incident came after a string of other bizarre antics by Meldrum in recent years.

Back in January of ’23, I found myself caught up in quite the spectacle – none other than my beloved friend and music icon, Sir Elton John, wrapping up his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour at AAMI Park in Melbourne. And guess who decided to steal the show? None other than Meldrum! In a moment that left jaws dropped, he took it upon himself to drop his pants, turning an already unforgettable night into an experience I’ll never forget.

At the culmination of his performance, the artist behind I’m Still Standing invited Meldrum onto the stage for a joint rendition of The Bitch is Back.

At first, Meldrum claimed it was a wardrobe issue, but video evidence later emerged showing him repeatedly exposing himself to the crowd during the 2022 ChillOut Festival held in Daylesford, Victoria.
