Worlds 2024 Quarterfinals: LNG vs WBG

As a gamer, I kicked off the knockout stage of Worlds 2024 with an epic showdown between LNG Esports and Weibo Gaming. Hailing from the same gaming scene, we’ve had our fair share of encounters throughout this year, making this battle all the more exciting for me!

Game 1

The unsuccessful attempt by LNG in the bottom lane led to a trade of two kills against two, which went in their favor due to their numerical disadvantage (being one player short) at the start of the dive. This was generally supported on Weibo.

Zika’s Renekton could not find value in the early game, but LNG’s bot lane remained ahead.

After clinching victory against the initial wave of Voidgrubs, Zika and the entire LNG squad seized the opportunity to dominate Weibo. Following a disappointing start, they managed to regain their balance. Despite some minor conflicts, both teams maintained a close competition throughout the game.

In the game, Weibo attempted to claim their third Dragon, but they made a tactical error during the skirmish, resulting in them losing three champions, a tower, and handing over the advantage to Nocturne. The fog of war embodied by Nocturne’s Paranoia proved detrimental to Weibo, as their weak damage output and disorientation caused by the darkness prevented them from breaking LNG’s concentrated focus on a single target.

Rather than engaging in a battle, WBG chose instead to abandon the Hextech Soul and go for Baron Nashor. This strategic move proved to be a crippling blow to LNG.

In the clash that followed LNG’s effort to halt Baron’s advance, sadly four players from their team were defeated. With GALA being the last player from LNG standing, he struggled to maintain the defensive line. Ultimately, Weibo won Game 1 in just 31 minutes.

Game 2

This time around, the familiar bot lane ambush was orchestrated by Weibo. Fortunately, no one was eliminated in the skirmish, but a swift counter-attack by LNG resulted in two well-earned kills for their team.

In the early stages of this new game, it felt like LNG ruled supreme, quite a contrast compared to the previous one. When we found ourselves scrambling for the second Dragon of the match, LNG certainly exacted their toll in the form of numerous kill counts.

Multiple skirmishes took place, yet LNG remained in the lead. A particularly tough battle for WBG significantly widened the gap between them and their opponents.

In Game 1, Weibo lost the Baron yet again, leading to a subsequent fight. They aimed to end the game with the Baron advantage, but they lingered too long and the majority of their team was trapped within LNG’s base. Seizing this opportunity, LNG captured Mountain Soul instead.

In a turn of events, LNG consistently countered Weibo on Weibo. They managed to seize Baron, and when WBG attempted to challenge the Elder Dragon, LNG restored balance in the series.

Game 3

The third match began festively, leaning significantly towards Zika’s advantage. The player emerged victorious with a double kill.

Despite that, I found myself yearning for more. With a massive Shockwave at my disposal, I started accumulating wins to propel Weibo forward, Xiaohu.

In every instance, the outcome favored Weibo significantly, largely due to their skillfully played Orianna. Somehow, LNG managed to secure the Baron buff, initiated a confrontation shortly after, and seized the advantage for the first time in more than a minute.

After that juncture, things seemed to favor LNG. They managed to penetrate WBG’s fortress and regained the advantage in almost all lanes, with a few exceptions being the mid lane and support.

To retake the lead in the game, Weibo executed a powerful attack against Baron, causing chaos all around LNG. Light effortlessly maneuvered around LNG and managed to outlast the attacks directed at him. As LNG’s offensive abilities depleted, Weibo overpowered them during an extended battle, resulting in a 2-1 lead in the series for WBG once more.

Game 4

The match moved at a leisurely pace, noticeably so without the usual bot dives even after the lanes were swapped. It was during the initial wave of Voidgrubs that the first blood was drawn, with Weibo securing a double kill.

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, Xiaohu and Light were on fire! They snowballed their lead over LNG so quickly that it felt like we were rolling over a snowy hill, picking up speed with each second. At the 20-minute mark, we had amassed the largest advantage of the entire series, though it was just around 4,000 points. But let’s be real, this series was tight as a drumhead, so every point mattered!

Weibo kept growing this lead to almost 10,000 gold ahead of LNG by the time they took Baron.

Scout’s Yone thwarted the Weibo push momentarily with a Synapse-worthy triple kill, but their adversaries were too far ahead. Weibo Gaming defied expectations, and with this win, established themselves as a top-four team in Worlds 2024.
