World of Warcraft doesn’t need any help staying relevant 20 years on
As a longtime World of Warcraft player, I must say that the recent changes and updates have been nothing short of exhilarating! Coming from someone who has witnessed the game’s evolution since its inception, it’s heartening to see such a renewed sense of adventure and experimentation.
The popular game World of Warcraft is gearing up for its upcoming expansion, titled The War Within, on August 22nd. Remarkably, the developers at Blizzard appear to be enjoying themselves while working on it, experimenting with innovative and unexpected concepts based on earlier versions of the game. This has resulted in a flurry of creative updates that have effectively shaken up the usual patterns of an online game nearing its 20th anniversary. The once predictable rhythm has been delightfully disrupted, making the experience more dynamic and unpredictable. Despite being fragmented with players spread across multiple versions of the game, each with its unique fan base, it’s clear that the game is thriving more than ever before.
Over the past 18 months or so, a significant amount of positive transformation has occurred, and it’s clear that the driving force behind this creative surge and positive energy is none other than World of Warcraft Classic. This version of WoW takes players on a nostalgic journey back to the game’s launch in 2004, exploring classic expansions along the way. It coexists with contemporary WoW under the same subscription plan but boasts its unique community (a collection of smaller communities) and development team. These developers have been taking some daring risks with their timeless project, much to the joy of players. Remarkably, this pioneering spirit of innovation seems to have spread throughout the entire WoW team.
In essence, it appears that World of Warcraft (WoW) as a whole is discovering through WoW Classic that Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOs) don’t necessarily need to be single, unified experiences. As WoW matures, it might be more beneficial if these games are divided, restructured, and reinvented internally. Instead of one massive feast of content, they could provide a selection of various gaming experiences. They can capitalize on nostalgia while also using the past to explore new directions in the MMO genre itself.
After almost two decades, World of Warcraft (WoW) and its community find themselves venturing into uncharted waters. While other online games have been operational for longer periods – EverQuest, a significant influence on WoW, reached its 25th anniversary in 2024 – it’s difficult to think of many counterparts that have maintained their dominant position in their specific genre for such an extended period. As WoW ages, Blizzard faces intriguing challenges: How does a game running continuously for decades interact with its own past? How does it adapt to external trends? How does it reinvent itself beyond just providing new content? How does it prevent familiarity from turning into boredom?
At the Game Developers Conference in March, John Hight – who was formerly in charge of the Warcraft franchise at Blizzard – presented a candid discussion revealing the significant decline and loss of World of Warcraft (WoW) players due to Blizzard’s challenges in addressing certain issues. During his talk, as reported by Korean site Inven and summarized by Wowhead, Hight displayed a graph illustrating the number of WoW subscribers over the past eight years, showing substantial drops occurring between each biennial expansion and smaller, diminishing spikes when new expansions were launched.
Initially, a significant drop in subscribers was observed following the launch of the disliked “Battle for Azeroth” expansion in 2018. However, this decline was temporarily hidden the next year with the massive surge in popularity of “World of Warcraft Classic.” This popularity persisted due to the increased gaming during the pandemic in 2020. When the eighth expansion, “Shadowlands,” was released at the end of 2020, everything seemed fine initially. But soon after, Blizzard noticed an unusually high rate of subscribers leaving, which wasn’t effectively controlled by the release of two more “Classic” expansions. Unfortunately, the launch numbers for the well-received 2022 expansion, “Dragonflight,” were disappointing even by pre-“Classic” standards. This indicated that World of Warcraft was experiencing a decline, and without the influence of “Classic,” it was in serious trouble.
High criticized the “Shadowlands” expansion, and it seems Blizzard is now acknowledging the concerns raised by fans. They found the setting in the disjointed realms of the afterlife to be isolating, felt the story failed to properly develop certain characters, found the “borrowed-power” mechanics forgettable, and agreed that the intervals between updates were excessive.
In a surprising reversal, Hight’s final graph slide revealed a remarkable comeback. When Hight was presenting in March 2024, the number of World of Warcraft subscribers surpassed the figures at Dragonflight’s launch and kept growing. Hight proudly declared “record post-launch stability and growth.” So, what changed? As YouTube content creator Bellular noted, Blizzard focused on improving the fundamentals, consistently delivering updates and an enhanced gear progression system. However, it was the Classic updates, starting in August 2023, that initiated Hight’s graph to spike upwards. It was Classic that introduced two innovative play styles that disrupted the traditional expansion-to-expansion pattern, even offering new methods for structuring a massively multiplayer online game.
Initially, Hardcore mode emerged as an informal player challenge, later adopted officially by Blizzard within the Classic server version of World of Warcraft (WoW). Despite the idea seeming implausible for a slow-paced MMO like Classic WoW, it thrives; it infuses excitement and camaraderie into the game’s established routines, rejuvenating them with freshness.
In late 2023, approximately a few months after the launch of WoW Classic, the team introduced a new server variant called Season of Discovery. This version further modified the classic game, much like it was inspired by its sister game, Diablo. Similar to how Diablo frequently resets itself with seasons that change the game mechanics, Season of Discovery invited players to create new characters and start fresh.
Using a more conversational tone: The Classic team boldly chose two paths with Hardcore and Season of Discovery. Initially, they recognized that World of Warcraft’s original design wasn’t inviolable; they could modify its fundamental rules if desired. More importantly, they disregarded concerns about splitting the audience. Currently, there are five ways to experience World of Warcraft Classic: the base game, the Cataclysm expansion, Season of Discovery, and two Hardcore versions. However, due to the straightforward payment structure—a single subscription fee grants access to everything except the latest modern-game expansion—Blizzard doesn’t mind as long as players are actively involved.
In transitioning from 2023 to 2024, the contemporary World of Warcraft (WoW) development team quickly took inspiration from their counterparts who worked on Classic. Towards the tail end of Dragonflight’s swift update cycle, Blizzard began releasing unexpected, standalone tests to its player base. Initially, they introduced Plunderstorm – a pirate-themed, time-limited battle royale mode featuring distinct character advancement. Although it wasn’t polished, it demonstrated a readiness to innovate and provide additional engaging activities for players outside the traditional gameplay environment.
Following the conclusion of the Dragonflight saga, Blizzard introduced a refreshed take on Mists of Pandaria, dubbed Mists of Pandaria Remix, as a bridge to The War Within. This interim event invited players to create Timewalker characters and re-experience WoW’s fourth expansion with updated features, abilities, expedited leveling, and infinite loot that escalated their power exponentially. Spanning over several months and concluding just before the release of The War Within, Mists of Pandaria Remix has been an exciting journey. As a unique way to revisit a past expansion and a type of power-leveling fantasy, it’s been enjoyable, even if not as intricate or comprehensive as Season of Discovery. However, it successfully kept the community buzzing and players engaged during the gap between Dragonflight’s final update and The War Within’s launch.
Currently, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding “World of Warcraft”. This isn’t surprising since the pre-expansion patch for “The War Within” has been released, introducing invigorating updates as these patches typically do. For veterans like myself, this patch holds a special nostalgic appeal because Blizzard understands that it’s crucial to cater to those who have been with the game for a long time, while also ensuring it remains engaging and user-friendly for newcomers. I always look forward to revisiting the game and discovering what’s new.
In contrast to previous periods, World of Warcraft (WoW) players have experienced a consistent sense of excitement for over a year now, particularly those who play both Classic and the contemporary game. It’s not just that there have been numerous updates, though that is true; it’s the innovative spirit, the experimental vibe, and the simple joy that have been woven into many of these updates. At a stage in its lifecycle where one might anticipate a slowdown, WoW is instead accelerating; when one might expect consolidation, it’s fragmenting into numerous new opportunities. Remarkably, it’s the Classic community, which one might assume to be traditional and nostalgic, that has been the driving force behind this transformation. The spirit of adventure in the old game remains very much alive.
