Before watching the new movie Wonder Man, some Marvel fans might enjoy revisiting a few earlier MCU projects.
The new Marvel series, Wonder Man, starts streaming on Disney+ today. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays the lead role of Simon Williams, also known as Wonder Man, and Ben Kingsley returns as his character, Trevor Slattery, from previous Marvel films. The series was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest.
Simon Williams, an up-and-coming actor in Hollywood, is having trouble launching his career. He unexpectedly meets Trevor Slattery, a veteran actor whose prime may be over. They both discover that the famous director Von Kovak is rebooting the superhero movie Wonder Man. The show follows these two actors – one just starting out, the other with a long history – as they relentlessly pursue roles in the film, offering viewers an inside look at how the entertainment industry works.
What MCU projects should you watch before Wonder Man?
Before you dive into the new Wonder Man series, it’s helpful to revisit Shane Black’s 2013 film, Iron Man 3. That’s where audiences first met Trevor Slattery, a character who plays a significant role in Wonder Man. Over the last thirteen years, Trevor’s story has developed in interesting ways, and Iron Man 3 provides the foundation for understanding his journey.
After that, the short film All Hail the King, released in 2014, helps connect the stories of Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It’s only 14 minutes long.
So it’s not surprising that we recommend watching Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings next. It brings back the character Trevor and was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who’s also directing the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This suggests these projects could have connections and share creative elements.
If you’re getting ready for the new Wonder Man series, the last Marvel movie you should watch is Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s where the Department of Damage Control (DODC) really starts to become a significant storyline, hinting at them becoming major villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plus, No Way Home introduces the character P. Cleary, played by Arian Moayed, who will reappear in Wonder Man.
This marks Wonder Man’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so viewers won’t need any prior knowledge about the character to enjoy the show. It’s currently unknown when or if Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will reprise his role as Wonder Man in future MCU projects, as there haven’t been any official announcements yet.
