Women of color lead the charge in newest women’s revolution across wrestling
As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the evolution of professional wrestling over the years, I can confidently say that we are witnessing a groundbreaking era in the world of sports entertainment. The women’s division is not just leading the charge; they are shattering glass ceilings and redefining what it means to be a wrestler.
There’s been plenty of discussion about women’s wrestling in major organizations, no matter where your allegiance lies. However, one point is universally agreed upon: The women are taking charge, with their work eliciting a more consistently favorable reaction compared to the past. Delving further, it’s noteworthy that women of color are spearheading this movement, which some are labeling as another revolution in professional wrestling and sports entertainment.
Wow, what an incredible week it’s been for women’s wrestling! I’ve been absolutely thrilled to witness Giulia’s grand entrance at NXT No Mercy, where she challenged Roxanne Perez, fresh off her title defense against Jadia Parker. Earlier in the same show, Kelani Jordan retained her NXT Women’s North American Championship against Wendy Choo. On SmackDown, the electrifying street fight between Nia Jax and Michin was simply outstanding! It’s fantastic to see so many women of color dominating the top bookings across WWE’s women’s division. The future looks bright indeed!
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is witnessing its women’s division flourish, with women of color spearheading the growth. In the main event at Collision, Hikaru Shida emerged victorious against Serena Deeb, Thunder Rosa, and Queen Aminata, earning a title shot against Mercedes Mone for the TBS Championship at All Out. Meanwhile, Mercedes Mone displayed an exceptional performance at NJPW Capital Collision against Momo Watanabe, a fight that many are hailing as one of her finest since departing from WWE. The influx of Mone into AEW earlier this year has undeniably sparked the positive changes in booking that the entire division is currently benefiting from.
This statement isn’t meant to undermine the valuable contributions made by other female wrestlers. There’s plenty of recognition to go around. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge who is leading the charge against the stereotype that women’s wrestling doesn’t attract audiences and can’t sustain a promotion. Although there’s still much work and progress to be done, this is an exciting period for many in the women’s division of professional wrestling. Yet, it’s essential to see more changes to fully appreciate these shifts. Nevertheless, one thing is clear: if this is a new phase of the women’s revolution in wrestling, it’s being spearheaded by women of color.
